There was an outfit near Tauton that sold original CD curtains. I bought a set, but they were a bit pricey. Maybe someone out there remembers the name of the source.

The name of the source (a former Cape Dory employee) came up when I posted pictures of my 'original' curtain reproductions in December 2007. Try searching the archives.

Searching for "curtains", I found:

East Coast made me a beautiful set of port curtains for my CD25D exactly to OEM specs. Included was the logo in brown that was on the oiriginals. Not the cheapest but authentic.

Try East Coast Embroidery. They still make original CD curtains - one of the Vavolotis brothers is owner I think. High quality - not cheap. Has the CD logo on it.

On the other hand, if you make the curtains yourself (or know someone who'll do it for you), any local embroidery place can scan the old logo, then reproduce it as many times as--and whatever size--you want. There's a one-time setup fee (I think it was $35--then a small amount per item) but then you're good to go as long as the place is in business.

New curtains can still be purchased from east Coast Embroidery. If you consider the workamnship, I don't even think they are all that expensive. I believ a set for my CD36 Indigo was about $325. or so.

So, I often benefit from others' learning on this board, and I thought it was time to serve as the guinea pig.

I tried to revive my original Cape Dory curtains. I soaked them in oxyclean, which removed most of the old rubber backing and brightened them considerably after 24 years of hanging in the boat. Then, I washed them, and they looked pretty good, minus the lining.

I found white rubber rug backing at a craft store--Saf-t-Bak, laid the curtains out on wax paper, and "painted" the back of the curtains with the material. Despite trying to do several light coats of the material, it soaked through to the front of the curtains, and formed splotchy white areas on the front. I tried experimenting with three other curtains, and simply could not keep the rug backing on one side of the very thin fabric that is the curtain. I could not get good results.

So, I've placed an order with East Coast Embroidery for 12 new curtains. If the new ones come with the CD logo on them, I'll post a follow-up offering the 8 clean curtains to anyone interested.

I'm intrigued by this post and since my boat has been moved closer to the dock this year privacy is a real issue for the first time. So I'll order the curtains from East Coast but how do they get attached if no previous curtains were hanging? Are there curtain rods that can be purchased that would be like originals? Not on the boat at the moment so I can't visualize.

Hi, Dick.

You probably already have the curtain "rods," as the CD's I've seen all use a thin aluminum track above the portlight. The curtains themselves have a plastic-tabbed tape sewn on the back; the tabs simply slide into the slot in the aluminum track.

When I was making a set of curtains for Morveren, several board members steered me to Sailrite, which sells said tape, and 'Marilou' (also from this board) kindly loaned me original curtains for measurements and for copying the logo. So our new curtains were truly a group effort

By the way, if you're wondering what the fabric was for our original CD curtains, they were made of foam-backed Weaver's Cloth, sometimes simply referred to as insulated curtains. It's usually either cotton or a cotton/poly blend, and yes, it's machine washable. If you can't find insulated weaver's cloth in your local fabric store, you can by a pair of drapes that were meant for the windows in your house and use them just for the fabric. Here are a couple places (online) to purchase weaver's cloth drapes:

Plow & Hearth -- drapes
Country Curtains -- fabric by the yard
BedBathStore -- foam-backed cotton duck curtains

You can also get acrylic suede-backed weaver's cloth:

Cabela's -- drapes
Bargain Outfitters -- drapes

Whatever cloth you buy, make sure it is machine washable and not dry clean only.
