Since Photosite went out, I decided to post some photos of the restoration of our Cape Dory 25, "Gladys Erzella", on flickr.
Here's the link for anyone interested.

Since most of these were taken we've replaced nav lights with LED's, replaced the AM/FM with a new unit that can play MP3's, polished all stanchions and pulpits, installed HD SS padeye in cockpit for tethers, replaced VHF cable from masthead to VHF radio, replaced frayed forestay, polished broadsides, sanded, cleaned and bleached all exterior teak to apply 4 coats of Cetol.
Can't wait until she sails south to Mexico and into the Sea of Cortez!
Fair winds....

Great before-and-after, what a cozy little yacht. I'd like to understand more about the wind vane (?) and how well it works for you

Wind Vane

Post by mexsailor »

I did a lot of reading on Wind Vanes after deciding I didn't feel like spending a few thousand for a new one. This design I basically got from an old, out of print, book I found on Amazon. I refined it a bit and it still needs fine tuning, however, it seems to work o.k. as I've had it steer the boat for almost 8 miles until I had to tack. I've not tried in the ocean yet but hope to this summer. Once I get the sails set just right, where she's almost sailing herself, I attach the vane after setting the vane to the proper heading in relation to the apparent wind. After that, it sort of takes over and does her thing. It really surprised me and although I haven't left the cockpit yet while she's in control, I'm slowly getting more confident in its capabilities. Total cost was under $150.00. Most expensive items were the ball bearings. The 2" PVC base has aluminum pipe inside for strength and is attached to old Monitor mounts the PO had installed many years ago. I sewed the vane itself from material taken from an old, torn sail I had.
Hope this helps....

Nice work. I remember reading your posts as DanaVin. I'm in San Diego, but my boat is in Mission Bay.

I work down in Chula Vista. Thanks for posting the pictures. They are great for getting ideas.

I've enjoyed your photos... particularly the head. Is that a macerator behind the head? Is there a vented loop there somewhere?

I note your electrical panel is not original Cape Dory... someone has upgraded it.

Thanks for sharing!

There is no vented loop installed at this time. Plans call for doing so in next round of upgrades. Meantime, both thru hulls are always off and banded shut. The macerator is directly behind and aft a bit of the head and under the holding tank.
The panel must have been upgraded by PO. I didn't know it wasn't original until you mentioned it.
Thanks for info....
I'm posting more photos on flickr and that other website the lady suggested as soon as I get rid of this cold.
