Is it really over? I mean for being really, truly over. Early on, I said that I refuse to be drawn into the (fray?). Oh, how several times I fought my keyboard to stay aloof of the subject. Cold compresses helped a lot.
It would have been so easy to determine which is the better way, lock or freewheel. Niceville Mike (Kayla) hit the nail on the head when he mentioned to sail locked and check your speed. Then, sailing under the identical conditions, unlock the prop and recheck the speed.
In all of the months and years that this discussion (?) has been going on, I am surprised that at not any time has anyone mentioned something that would have put this debate (?) to bed early on.
Unless I missed reading it, no one has mentioned the obscure, but all encompassing Newton's Fourth Law Of Motion. Look it up.

I know its basically off the topic but the other time I was drawn into this discussion I was home in norhtern NY because I was enjoying a snowday ( over a year ago before I retired from teaching) ) I want to note that this time I am anchored off Punta Gorda, Fl - its in the 70s with a light easterly breeze - we had a beautiful 3 hr sail up Charlotte Harbor yesterday. (back to topic - I let the prop freewheel for a time but then locked it because of the noise and possible wear) Jon - stay warm on Lake Ontario - we're coming back this spring.

I believe it is over....

Yes, I believe it is over at last. And true enough, it should never have taken this long.
It was always the case that freewheeling provided less drag, and it was always provable, but the other side would simply not accept it.
To this day, we do not have capitulation from the original instigator himself, and I would think that would be the thing for him to do, but different strokes for different folks as they say.
I do have some regret at having to press the point this long, but I think the truth is necessary, and even though some people find this whole topic less than worthwhile, the assertions of the "proplockers" needed to be countered in my mind.
I do hope there are no hard feelings anywhere.
