Painting topsides; a new hull color?

Post by Bob Emmons »

I have a 1981 CD30, that is scheduled to be painted with awlgrip in the near future. I am considering a dark blue hull color, however I need feedback on
1) Temperature rise inside boat on a hot day, is it considerable?
2) Will the fiberglass cloth pattern show under the gel coat
when painted a dark color? (I have witnessed this on other boats)

If anyone can offer advice, or has painted their topsides, I would appreciate the information. By the way, it will be done by a
professional with srpay equipment.

I can tell you with certainty that
1. it is best to paint the boat with the same color that is its original color for purposes of covering
2. that no matter what the rest of the world says the success of the paint job depends upon your painters experience. and the least advise you give him the better off you are..

Now....if you paint it white you will not notice any change in T

if blue : a light blue you will notice a SMALL change below decks if any...enough that one beer can dispel..
a dark blue will defintley raise the temp 10 degrees or more in the summer..

So why are all or most homes with roof dark shingles???for appearance..light ones get dirty quicker ...darker ones look richer

Paint her white again

I keep reading on here and elsewhere that it's a bad idea to change the color of a boat. BUt I'm with you. I really want to change my CD 25 to a dark green. If somebody can offer the slightest bit of encouragement, I will do it this sping/.

Eric:

I had my Cape Dory awlgriped dark green about 10 years ago and I have been completely satisfied with my decision. From my experience, I see absolutely no reason for you not to have her painted.

Painting and awlgripping are two different things, though

Our boat CD 28 Trawler "HUNKY DORY" had a white awlgripped hull when we bought her. The decks and house had some cracks and crazing so we had the decks, house and cockpit awlgripped. COULDN'T BE HAPPIER!!!
We get rave reviews everywhere we go. The best part is NO WAXING. The factory rep told us to never ever wax or polish the finish. The hard glossy finish is only microns thick and all wax/polish has some abrasives in it. It will SHINE for years with a good soapy wash.
Also be advised that when painting, if the painters make a mistake, get runs, sags or over spray, they ABSOLUTELY CANNOT SAND AND OR BUFF THEM OUT. THAT SECTION MUST BE REPAINTED (as per the the paint rep). It is worth every thing you have to do for the results. DO IT NOW! GOOD LUCK
