Nav Station

Post by Kevin »

I am looking forward to my second season with my CD 31. My boat does not have a dedicated Nav Station so I use either the galley counter or dining table. Just wondering what others use and if anyone has added a dedicated station. If so, where is it located?

I have a CD28 (#272) and use a wood tabletop of sorts that I made that fits snuggly over the ice box to starboard. It consists of a flat piece of smooth plywood stained and varnished with a slightly smaller size piece of ensolite padding on the reverse side that acts as an insulation pad for the icebox. I saved enough room to the right of the tabletop for instruments (pencils, dividers, straight edges, etc.) . When I don't need it I store it in the wet closet behind the head. The cigarette lighter just above the icebox serves as a minilight to aid in plotting.

Kevin - We have a CD30 and I'm not sure how similar the 30 interior is to the 31. At any rate, I built a custom nav-station on the port side of the main salon that utilizes about a 3 foot section of the large storage shelf just above the setee back. It starts at the main bulkhead and runs aft about 40" actually. It houses a weather fax, a weather fax printer, loran, remote VHF/intercom head, 2nd knotmeter, breaker panel, fixed GPS, and a handheld GPS that can be removed, and has room for a chart plotter that hasn't been purchased yet. Inside it has an Autohelm computer, a FM/TV electronic box, paper supply for the weather fax, electrical buss bars and interface junctions etc.,.

We use the bulkhead drop down dinette table as the nav table which works well. It would be a little tight for the legs of a big person the way we use it because we only open up half the table so we can still walk past it. There is a 18" Aqua Signal gooseneck lamp (red/white) that is mounted to the bulkhead vertical door trim at just above the table. The lighthead clips neatly to a clip higher up to keep it secured and out of the way when not in use. I installed a teak and plexi chart rack overhead on the cabin top just forward of the main hatch. Clear plexi was used so that weather/cloud charts would always be visible and other important materials could be viewed without having to remove them from the chart rack. All nav tools and supplies are stored in holders adjacent to the table and in a special section behind the setee back.

The plywood back that supports the setee was cut off about one foot from the forward end and hinges upward independent of the rest of the setee back. The cushion was modified as well so there is a regular setee back cushion that is now in two sections. A large section and a one foot section. The small one foot setee back can be lifted up independently to gain acess to the storage area for all sorts of nav supplies and needs. I can e-mail you a picture of the nav station taken quite awhile ago. It was taken when new GPS equipment was being installed so there is a 10" empty space on the right as new facia was being built. You could at least see the rest of it.

we have a CD30 Ketch with a wonderful nav station retrofit: the aft end of the starboard berth in the main saloon has been attenuated to accomodate rearward facing(replaceable with board and cushion)footspace and removable desk: placement includes radar and depth screen reversible for cockpit viewing; adjoining space includes loran, radio and storage. schematic on request.

Kevin,

On our CD28 (#346, 1983) we hav the head on port and across from it on starboard is a cabinet with sink. I removed the sink, pump, plumbing, wood trim but left the cabinet counter top in-place. I enlarged the hole in the counter top to leave about a 3" flange. On the back side of the counter top I put in some pin-rail. On the front side of the counter top I put a wooden strip about 2" tall. To cover the hole in the counter top I used some 1/4" plywood, covered with white Formica laminate. Under the TOP, in the space vacated by the sink, pump, etc, I built 2 storage bins/drawers (6" deep, 12" wide, 24" long). The two bins/draws are a nice bonus. It is a little tight, but it is a good use of space otherwise not needed on our boat. One other feature, the plywood TOP can be removed, taken to the cockpit, and used as a huge clip-board.

BTW, we are the proud owner's of a new DIGITAL CAMERA, PHOTO FORTHCOMMING!

I just completed a nav station for a 25D. It consist of a bi-fold 24"x24" table with removable hinges. It mounts over the galley area and folds up (in half and to outboard) for temperory access to the galley stove and trash locker, or when the galley is in operation, it is removed and stored behind the port sette.

Olli,

On several attempts I've tried unsuccessfully to send you the pictures. Your e-mail does not work. Error says "host" is unknown. Double check your e-mail address you have listed and if it's in error post a correction and I'll try again.
