Typhoon Genoa

Post by Bill Bloxham »

While measuring my Typhoon for new sails I discovered the genoa size listed on my specifictions sheet (undated) is 180%. This suprised me no end - the genoa I have now is 120%. Or perhaps I should not be suprised - the main on my boat (original 1974) is for a daysailor. My Typhoon is a Weekender. My original sails are Cheong Lee of Hong Kong. The boat has always lived in northern Barnagat Bay, NJ.
So help me out. What size genoas are working for us? And if you have roller furling (the original intent of my measuring), could you tell me what size range works for you?

bill,
i've got a 180 also for my '76 typhoon weekender. good size sail for light air, but the wind range is pretty narrow. over 10-12 it gets a little overpowering; under 4-5 the cloth is too heavy to maintain good sailshape. i bought an asymmetrical spinnaker (gennaker) that works great in the lighter airs.

Greeting Bill,
Last summer I had clarke bassett of kappa sails (kappasails.com)in Westbrook,CT make me a new genoa for use on our 1971 Ty and he recommended and built a 165% genoa to fit on a new roller..It rolls up to 85% like a champ (alto you have to move the lead way forward for opt trim)..The 165 is great in light air here on long island sound in august..I like it and clarke used the original diagrams to make it..
Good luck,
Rodney
