Atlantic T6E heater hook-up

Post by Ben Thomas »

I have the atlantic t6e water heater in my 82 30 cutter. heater works well on shore power. so no problems there. what I want to do is hook the heat exchanger to my cooling system. which is on the volvo md7a, raw water cooled system. I've checked the archive postings on water heaters/heat exchangers, found atlantics numbers, called talked to
Ed, very helpful, he faxed me the installation instructions on the heater. what the instructions assume is a contained water cooling system recirculating coolant through system.
my question is how do you connect the raw water cooling system into the water heater. if anyone has any experience on this I would really be grateful for any info. very specific info is better. point a to b and so on. thanks, ben

Ben,
If you searched the archives, you probably already saw all the stuff I discussed about the installation of a T6E. I hooked to a closed cooling system, and don't have a clue as to how to hook up to raw water systems. I would suggest that you contact Volvo and ask them, they must have done it before. Sorry I couldn't be of more help....

Hi,

Take the engines hot water outlet hose, which is a black rubberized 11/4 in. O.D. hose I believe, and route it to your heaters inlet port. Connect the heaters outlet port to the muffler water inlet (where the black hose was connected up to). The hot water tank should be on the same level as the muffler inlet, or as close as possible. Now I know the CD30 well, and this is impossible to attain, so make it as close as possible to the same level. Also, keep the run to and from the tank as short as possible. Protect that hose with anti-chafing gear, and other extraordinary measures, as the water is the cooling agent for the muffler system and hose, and you would not want to loose that cooling water through an abraded outlet hose. It wouldn't hurt the engine, but the muffler and hoses would tend to cook a bit I expect. Could get decidedly unpleasant.

Hope this helps.

Well I finally got this thing figured out, on the small hose running from exhaust manifold to muffler tank inlet, make a cut, attach 90* elbow run hose to atlantic heat exchanger inlet. then from outlet of heat exc. run hose back to muffler tank. with any luck I'll have out water when I charge batterys.
