repowering 36CD

Post by jerryaxler »

I have to make some hard decisions on repowering or rebuilding the tranny. My hurth transmission is shot and they no longer make the exact same tranny. The choice is to rebed the engine in order to fit the new tranny or to repower, since the costs involved are both high, I'm at a loss as what to do. Is there a source for rebuilt Hurth 3:1 tranny? What is the cost to repower? What is the cost to rebed and add new tranny? Shana is an '86 CD36 with a 4-108 Perkins. I'm interested in the listening to the views of this board, before I make a choice.

Decisions

Post by tartansailor »

Jerry,
A big Perkins 4-108 is to my way of thinking a really great engine.
Assuming that it is fresh water cooled and less than 3,000 hours, I would do everything in my ability to find a rebuild shop for your Hurth;
even to the point of shipping it to the West Coast.

There are diesel fanatic forums on the internet, and although I do not subscribe to any, it seems to me to be a good place to start.

Hope the problem is corrected as painless as possible.

Assuming that you have a Perkins 4.108, many of us have a 1.98:1 transmission and either a 15RH14 or 15RH12 prop. This transmission can still be rebuilt, but there is a company by another name that makes the same transmission if you need new.

Rebed Anyway

Post by Parfait's Provider »

I repowered Parfait with a Yanmar, like the Robinhoods, but my 4-108 had problems and was going to have to be rebuilt and the bed needed to be replaced anyway. If you love your Perkins and can get it back in operation for less than a decent discount on all new equipment with new technology, I'd suggest you go for a rebuilt tranny.

Rebuild the Hurth gear

Post by Greg Kozlowski »

The Hurth gear in our 1979 CD36 packed it in on route along the coast of Corsica 5 years ago. We pulled into Ajaccio under sail, took out the gearbox and sent it by FEDEX to Golden Arrow Marine in England for rebuilding. We were back up and and running in three weeks... total hit including FEDEX charges was under a grand.

If you can't find a competent outfit in the US to do the job send it to England

Which transmission do you have? Mahalo has some flavor of the Hurth HBW150.

According to the web site below some flavor of the new ZF 15 would be the direct replacement. You can put in the Perkins 4-108M as your engine and select the rating:

ZF 15 M Data Sheets:

You can also find dealers using search on the web site:

Transmission

Post by jerryaxler »

I have the Hurth HBW 10 3R. We may be able to fit the ZF 15 but is a 1/2 " wider, longer and drop. It is a tight squeeze and it doesn't appear as though it will fit without rebedding the engine, but it may be worth a try if I can't get a rebuild on the old transmission.
