I'm down in Trinidad now and my 22 year old MD7A, on hull 77, has finally become unworkable without a complete overhaul, forgetaboutit. . .
I've checked the old messages on repowering and it seems like the Yanmer 2GM has proved satisfactory. Unfortunately the v-drive cannot be found by the distributor down here without a substantial wait - so they are trying to sell me a 3GM.
Question?? Would a 3GM be a waste of: power, money, weight, space?
Question?? How about Hurth v-drives on a Yanmar??
Question?? Keeping with diesel, any other experiences with repowering?
NOTE: I refuse to rebuild, there is a strong suspicion that the raw water cooling ducts on the lower end are leaking into the block, I've already rebuilt the head 9 months ago in Puerto Rico - not another penny goes into this one.

Repowering CD 30 w/Yanmar

Re: Repowering CD 30 w/Yanmar
Matt,
Mack Boring, the manufacturer of the Yanmar marine diesel engines, is also a distributor for Velvet Drive, ZF, Hurth and Kanzaki Transmissions. The Hurth is used on many sailboats with just about any diesel engine. Our CD32 has a Westerbeke 21A diesel with a Hurth transmission.
One thing you may want to keep in mind with a new engine is the location and size of the exhaust. Sometimes repowering also means replacing or moving the thru-hull fittings for the intake and exhaust and all the hoses. It's a big job.
Have you tried contacting <a href="http://www.mackboring.com/">Mack Boring</a> directly to see if there really is a long wait? They can ship directly to you as a "yacht in transit". Here's contact info for Mack Boring.

Re: Repowering CD 30 w/Yanmar
Hi,
A few years back, we were faced with the decision you are faced with. I researched viable alternatives to a rebuild, and came up with a pretty good deal.
Westerbeke makes an 18hp drop-in replacement for the MD7A/B. There is an engineering company down in the Carolinas or Kentucky I believe, that will sell you the engine, take your V-Drive/Reverse gear off the MD7A/B, make a personality plate to bolt between the reverse gear/V-Drive and the new engine, and ship it to your site.
Now the price was ~$7000 in 1994, so I would bet that price would be $8500-9000 now. The only mods needed to the existing engine space in my 1983 CD30 would be to allow the engine to stick out 1 inch further than it presently does.
In the end, we rebuilt the engine for $2500, and now it runs like a new engine. But you have other issues with yours, and you are right..it's time is up. I will look around my office for the brochure from 6 years ago and post it later this weekend. (yup, it's still here..that's the problem <heh> so's a lot of other articles)
Cheers!

Re: Some Westerbeke Info
Thanks for the info, turns out that there is a Westerbeke/Universal dealer here in Trinidad, Dockyard Electric, Crew's Inn, Chaguarmas, newly appointed and without any local advertising yet. I found them via the VI outfit recommended. Looks like my best bet is a Universal M3-20 B with a hurth v-drive. Price about $5,700.
