Cored or Solid

Post by JCLOUDR »

I have a 33 power CD fly bridge. Question: Is the hull solid or cored? Is the solid below the waterline and cored above? Solid hull above and below?
Thanks,
John

The Cape Dory 33 Poweryacht was constructed with balsa core in the sides of the hull above the chine, and solid glass below.

That's for the CD33 sailboat not the CD33 powerboat.

I stand corrected, but that is the info I had for the 33 MV apparently it was incorrect. Now that makes me question the accuracy of the ref. book. David is the coring the same with all the MV models or just the 33?

Cored hulls

Post by David Perry »

The Cape Dory 30,33 and 36 powerboats were all cored with Balsa-core above the chine, or basically above the waterline. These are high speed vessels and keeping them as light as possible was important. Powerboats have large, flat topsides so rigidity was best handled by coring and not extra laminates.
As to the sailboats, the Intrepid 40 and the Cape Dory 45 were cored in their hulls using Airex.

CD28 Powerboat Hull

Post by AnnapolisMark »

I've put holes both below and above the waterline in the hull of my '91 CD28 powerboat. The hull is solid all the way to the rubrail. The decks are balsa cored except solid at the bow forward of the anchor locker and around the cockpit. The 28 is a full-keel semi-displacement hull while the larger powerboats were planing hulls.

All part of some celestial plan, it seems, Mitch. If not for a CD Stink Pot owner starting this very message board, you'd be posting that on a bathroom wall somewhere instead of on the world wide web.

Absolutely true.

Also when RESPITE's shaft snapped, a powerboat towed us to the repair facility, and once a mouse pulled a thorn from my paw.

The 33 is a Planing Hull

Post by AnnapolisMark »

Here is a quote from the Robinhood 33 specs "Clive Dent, noted Naval Architect of many Cape Dory models, designed the Robinhood 33 to perform in a variety of conditions. Her modified deep-V, hard chine hull gets up on a plane easily with minimal power. " The 28 is a soft chin true semi-displacement hull that was not designed by Clive Dent. He designed the boat from an existing hull design.
