Oops... Yes, I did remember to take the camera, and Yes! I put the reef in and took pictures along the way. We even sailed all afternoon with the reef, didn't really need it but we still did 6~7 knots and KAYLA had her way with yet another sailing virgin. By the way, the lady did an awesome job on the helm fo an hour or more!

OK, now for the bad news: I left the bloody camera on the boat. Since it's 3 hours round trip (AKA: about 9 gallons of gas), I ain't going back till next weekend at the earliest. Sorry folks...

Here's the line made from 1/4 (or 3/16) dacron with a bowline that is also whjipped and lashed:

To set, I push the loop thru the grommet from the starboard side and go under the boom, up to and back thru the loop. Here it is loosely in place:

Hi Gene,

This should be easy to adapt to a Ty as well.
One recommendation for the Ty is to buy an extra slide stop and keep it under your boom.

This has two purposes:

1) it'll keep the boom from dropping down when you lower sail or reef;

2) it's a handy spare for when the upper stop goes swimming...

Yep! been thar dun that!

That gives a much clearer picture. I tried your method this past Sunday, similar but it was my first try and not as neat, but it worked. Now I will have better idea when I reef again. I also like Sea Hunt's idea of leaving the line in place with a figure 8 on the opposite side of the loop to hold it in place so it is always there when needed.

Keeping the line attached does have its advantages, but I use the same line for both reef points. I definitely do not want two of them hanging there!

My reef line also has a "dedicated" spot in the cabin that I usually reach easily and quickly (on top of the rarely used stove...

). We also raced KAYLA pretty hard the first few years and always tried to keep things un-cluttered, especially top-side. Extra lines hanging from the main could get tangled or just cause "noise" I wouldn't want to put up with - but I do still enjoy listening to the gentle hum of my free-wheeling three-bladed prop!

New at this and I tried to post before but don't see it so am trying again.
I have a stainless pad eye on the port side of the mast, I hook a cunningham hoo with a line on it into it and then the line up through the cringle and down to the cleat at the base of the mast on the starboard side. It works with both reef points and does not restrict boom movement. Seems to work well on a CD 27.

jfischgrund, that's exactly what I did on my CD 27 as well. First time I was rigging the boat, approx. 10 years ago, I found the pad eye on one side and cleat on the other and seemed like it would work and that's what I've used since.
