Looking for Cape Dory 25D Owners
I bought a CD25D last year. I am interested in exchanging information on performance, maintenance etc. with other CD25 owners. I primarily sail on LI sound but am planning longer cruises this summer. Contact with others CDers in the east would be appreciated.

Lee: Thanks for the reply. I too bought my CD25D last spring. Hull #99 - built '83. She has roller furling and the original main. The boat has a lot of windward helm when the breeze gets up a bit. Seems a bit less when the jib is furled some but haven't experimented with furling the main. Any similar experience or suggestions. I sail mainly in LI sound but am planning a Cape Cod/Maine trip this spring. The only other problem was a ruptured/leaking high pressure line from the injector pump to the injector. Took some sleuthing to get the right part number from Mack Boring but I found a great fast distributor of Yanmar parts in RI - Old Port Marine. Get you the address etc. if you are interested.Lee H. I tried to respond to your questions, but I guess the reply went to 'cyber heaven'. I do the following to decrease the weather helm. 1. install a cunningham, this will bring the draft forward in the main, depowering the sail and moving the center of effort forward, all of which will decrease weather helm. 2. Let the traveler all the way out, this will maintain sail shape (controlled by the main sheet) while decreasing heel and reducing weather helm. 3. Make sure the head sail (jib or genoa) is properly trimmed. You can increase the power of the sail by making the sail fuller (ease the sheet, or move the turning block forward.
Hope you receive this, and I hope it is of some assistance.

We too have a fairly recent purchase of a CD 25D. She joined us in August 1995 here in St. Pete Beach, FL. While the weather here on the Suncoast of Florida is mostly bright and pleasant with great sailing breezes, we have discovered Oriental NC. Our Karma is Hull No. 63, built in 1984, and about 1 January she'll be at the dock of our new home in Oriental. Hope to make a trip to Annapolis in May with her. We too have noticed the weather helm and haven't thought about a cunningham but I think we'll try it. On the subject of engines, the Yanmar 1GM we have seems to be running pretty well, but I'm not that much of a diesel mechanic. I've seen a couple of notices from Mack Boring about a series of 1-day seminars at their place. Has anyone here ever tried them? Will look forward to following this group's postings. Bill

I don't know if any of you other commentators know that the CD 25D is trying for a new life as the 'Octavia 25'. If you want more information on her, see web page: www.boatshow.com/Octavia25/html. They have a rundown on her specs there, and what they are trying to do with the boat. I looked into buying one before I found my boat, but the asking price of $62.5K was a tad over my limit. As I understand it, the Octavia is nearly exactly the same boat as the CD 25D except for the engine which has been upgraded to a Westerbeke 2 cylinder at 12 hp. That ought to make a nice difference over the old 1GM at 7.5 hp. As of last summer, I don't think that Octavia had yet found a buyer for the first hull. Also on the Octavia page is a neat picture of what is clearly a CD 25D. I was able, for $10 bucks, to get a disk of the image from the screen developer, which I now use as my basic CRT image.

Must be CD25D fever! We too bought a 25D last spring. Our Dorielle is a 1984 Hull#174, and we love it. We sail the North Chesepeke Bay area out of Worton Creek. A truly neat place. I am interested in roller furling info. if any one has suggestion for this boat please advise. P.S. i used to sail LI on the Peconic Bay near Shelter Is. and Greenport. Great area . This year we are training our child the basics of seamanship.Jim Jamieson wrote: I bought a CD25D last year.
