Finally, a Cape Dory 28 for us!!!!

Post by oldragbaggers »

What a great day this was. (Crappy weather not withstanding.) Today we made an agreement with Michael and Sharon to purchase their CD-28, Splendid Splinter.
We had gone by the Hammock Island Marina where they keep her, spur of the moment, to see if the cover was off yet. It was. This was the second time we had driven by "just to look". Sharon had mentioned to me months ago that they might like to sell her, so Lance asked if I would call and just check to see if they were still interested in doing that. So I did, and even though Sharon was feeling a little under the weather, they jumped right into their car and met us at the marina to show us around.
The boat is obviously in great shape. A little spring cleaning and bright work and she will be the pride of the marina. They were wonderful to share everything they knew about the boat, brought all the documentation and were just generally a joy to talk to. We fell in love with the boat and a deal was struck.
We are beyond thrilled, and may even be able to participate in one of the summer cruises. It looks like this is shaping up to be a really great summer!!!
Whoo hoooooooooooo!

Lance and Becky,

Congratulations on becoming the new caretakers of Splendid Splinter. My wife and I keep our CD32 at Hammock and remember when Sharon and Mike appeared one day at Hammock with SS (with Bob Ohler on board as well). She's a nice boat and well kept.

We'll look for you when we arrive at Hammock (we live in Wisconsin) sometime in May. We do plan on going on the CDSOA cruise.

We will be moving the boat to Sue Island to the Baltimore Yacht Club after we get all the paperwork finalized, but hopefully now will catch up with some of the CDSOA folks at the summer events. Would love to meet you.
Hammock Island seemed like a lovely spot, unfortunately a bit of a drive for us. We live in Essex, up in Baltimore County. The marina where we will be keeping the boat is a bicycle ride from our house.

Well, a bike ride away is certainly better than a long car drive. Have fun with your new 28 and I hope we see you on one of the cruises..

Lance & Becky,

I'm a fellow CD28 owner and I love the 'little big boat', as the smallest of the Cape Dory big boats has been called. You will find it feels secure and comfortable whether on its feet or on its ear. Ernest K. Gann, whoever he is, said: 'I want a boat that drinks 6, eats 4, and sleeps 2', you have it.

For many new owners, myself included, buying a new boat is a shopping opportunity. I've bought stuff I never used to gussy her up. If you must, I suggest jacklines of webbing and harnesses fitted with double tethers, perhaps ones with integrated inflatable vests. Become familiar with using them, with hoving too, and with mainsail reefing. Particularly with a boat this size, one must be I minimalist about 'stuff' on board. But allow yourself a very few luxuries. For me, it's a french press and good coffee, a good book, and a CD player and a very few favorite CDs to play at anchor. I don't care to listen while sailing nor often at anchor, but when I'm in the mood, it's glorious.
Sail on,
Jack

Reef early and often. It's easier to shake out a reef when one is bored than it is to tuck one in when one is scared.

Thanks Seabelle, for the words of wisdom.
We have been looking for "our Cape Dory" for quite some time, so this is a very happy occassion indeed for us.
We have lived on boats before, and have owned quite a few over the past 27 years, so we know the temptations of the glossy magazines and marine store catalogs. But we have also learned over those years what works for us and what ended up collecting mildew in the lockers. I agree with you about the harnesses and tethers. We have a couple, but never set them up or used them in the past. I think that is a situation we shall remedy. As for music, we are pretty into the iPod right now, as you can store days and days worth of music on a contraption the size of your cell phone. Music is one of my favorite things and I wouldn't want to be without it.
What do you do for a dinghy? We were considering building a nesting hard dinghy. A lot of folks recommend an inflatable. We have one friend that uses a Port-a-boat (but that would not be my choice.) What say you?

Congrats Lance and Becky. I assume that this will slow the rebuilding progress on your CD-22. I enjoy reading about your boats on your blog and have been waiting for updates as you work the CD-22.

Thanks Ron!
We bought a Catalina 27 on eBay in February also. Another fixer we hope to make a couple of bucks on. We only paid $910, it was located at a marina just down the road from us so no shipping costs, and it's not really in that bad condition. But we're putting it in line behind the 22. As soon as we do the spring commissioning work on the 28 so that we can get out there and do some sailing, we will turn our attention back to the 22. I haven't blogged all winter for some reason. I have just recently started checking the site again. I intend to do a web log for the 28 as well. Generally I love the computer stuff but it's been a kind of crappy winter. Spring looks much more promising now.
Are you Chesapeake Fleet? We are really hoping to join the rendezvous on July 4-5 at Swan Creek and it would be nice if we could meet.
The folks on the Cape Dory board have to be the nicest and most supportive boat people anywhere.

I just saw that you are located in Maine.
Are you still freezing your crackers off up there?

No more freezing in my area and the temps are so warm that I took off the winter cover and am starting to do the spring cleanup. It is a "balmy" 45 degrees tonight and will go well into the 60's tomorrow. Most recreational boats don't launch until mid to late May and I tried May 8th launch three years ago. Other Mainers thought I was nuts and after two weeks of rain and cold.......I agreed with them

Well, time to turn on the electric blanket........

Good to hear from you and all the best with the 28.

If I had missed one of your posts about two years ago, I may have missed getting my 22! I'll never forget it.
