I've got a 82 CD 28 with a MD7B volvo and I'm looking for information on changing the cooling system to a fresh water type.Just a name of an after market company will be enough.

Re: looking for Info on Volvo MD7B cooling system
Mike, back when I bought my 1981 CD30, there was an optional kit made by SENDUR, or something like that as I remember. I never added one to PERI as PERI spent most of her life in fresh water. I'm not ever sure I'd have added one had PERI been a salt water boat, though. I will admit that one advantage that would come is hot water in the hot water heater, currently the cooling water isn't hot enough to heat my hot water tank.
I do have a question and that is, why do you feel the need to add fresh water cooling? And, to the larger readers of this forum, has anybody had an engine failure as a result of raw water cooling??
I remember back in my early boating days when boat engines were auto engines converted to marine use. They had a very finite life due to the engine block rusting out. However, this volvo really is a hunky built engine and I'm not sure that would ever happen in any normal life with this engine. I really don't know, though.

Re: looking for Info on Volvo MD7B cooling system
You may want to review the message earlier on this message board dated 10/02/97 regarding the original factory installed Sendure freshwater heat exchanger cooling system on our Volvo in our '83 CD30. By all means switch to freshwater cooling to reduce escalated corrosion damage that otherwise occurs with raw cooling. I had a Yanmar with raw cooling and I won't again. If you do decide to keep raw cooling at least install a freshwater flush out system.Mike Quinlan wrote: I've got a 82 CD 28 with a MD7B volvo and I'm looking for information on changing the cooling system to a fresh water type.Just a name of an after market company will be enough.

For my part, we have this system installed on our CD30 and it seems to work fine. My only complaint is that the model we have uses a belt driven, power take-off from the manual crank location on the engine to drive the pump which of course impacts the power output of the engine All parts are mounted on "front" of the engine (aft side in reality), which is only accessable via the lazarettes. This is a royal pain if you need to work on it, as one must be slim, agile and have good close-up vision to work under the cockpit. Basically, you have to "worm" your way in and work on your back, upside down.
