When the yard unstepped the top hamper on Hanalei a few weeks ago, they noticed that the forestay tension was excessive. It appears that the upper bearing on the furler had seized, causing the stay to tighten up/unscrew. Has anyone else had this problem? We didn't notice ANY problem using the furler this past season. She reefed fine every time we used it, never noticed any extra effort to furl the yankee at any point of sail. Second question is: What to do about it? It is a Harken fuller. Any comments would be appreciated....

Try calling Harken directly. I had trouble disassembling the foils on my Model 0 furler last year, and their tech support was fast, helpful and free (even though the unit is ten years old). They don't sell parts direct, but will give you the part number and West Marine can order direct for you.
Good luck.

p.s. the way to disassemble parts joined with red Loctite is to apply heat (with a torch). It works like a charm, but keep the flame away from the wire shrouds/stays.

Re: Forestay/roller furler problems...
Dave, when the yard removed my mast this year (first time since owning the boat) the front roller furling "unsprung" as if it was under spring tension. We discovered that the lower toggle assembly adjustment nut was frozen/rusted to the toggle and could never be
adjusted correctly...anyway I emailed harken and they email back and
said to get the "series number" off the top drum (might be hard to see
because it is covered with paint/coating stuff and give them a call. They said they normally don't sell to the public but will sell repair parts. it was 30 bucks less than west...
Hope this helps...

ps..that "series number" is not on the outside chrome(SP) cover, it's on the top of the drum near the welded shaft area thats inside the chrome cover...
