CD 28 sheet winches single or two speed?

Post by yamiracer »

All,

Did earlier CD 28's have 1 speed sheet winches. I know (at least some) lated CD 28's had 2 speeds. If the earlier boats did have single speed winches, when did they switch?

Thanks,

RW

winches

Hi RW,

My 74 CD28 Hull #11 had 2 Speed winches. Curiously, When I purchased my '82 CD28 2 years ago (Hull #335) from the original owner it had no winches at all, other than the cabintop winch for the club-footed jib. It was purchased new in '82 with no winches or stands!

I have since installed Spartan winch stands and winches off Ebay. If anyone has any Self-Tailing winches they are looking to sell, let me know.

The CD 28 base boat (early 1980's vintage) did not have genoa winches. The boat shipped with a mainsail and a club jib that was tended by the cabintop winch on the starboard side. There was a "genoa winch package" option that usually consisted of a pair of bronze Spartan winch bases, something like Lewmar 10 single speed bronze winches, and the bronze coaming cleats.

A perfect example of what happens when accountants start getting involved in boat building.

It's also possible that the lack of accountants is what put so many builders out of business. One never knows.
