TAMD41A not getting max RPM

Post by Eric Dobbyn »

Got a 28 Cruiser with 18x18 prop and tamd41a that max's rpms at 3500. Bottom is clean, prop newly reconditioned and motor running top notch. I believe she should max over 3600. Any comments or advise will be appreciated. Perhaps prop is too big? Thanks.

Eric -

Sounds like you are a tad low on RPMs. I don't know what prop the 28s use - my 30 twin engine uses 18x19's on the TAMD41B's

See my earlier posts - search on TAMD41 - and particularly this one. Note that these posts relate to CD 30's, though.

The specified WOT range for my TAMD41B engine was originally 3600-3800 rpm, though Volvo later raised the spec to 3700-3900.

Is your transom sooty? Do you get black smoke on acceleration? That can indicate (among other things) an overloaded engine. Is your boat particularly heavy - have you been bringing lots of gear aboard?

My TAMD41A with 18 x18 prop does 3600 when not overloaded. With 5 people, full water and fuel 3500 is OK too. Do you get 15 knots and 18 on a good day ? if so you are doing fine.

I have a 28 open that has been repowered with a kamd42. We swing
an 18X20 three blade and we turn 4000, which is by the book.

The TAMD41A should max out at 3950 MPMs with the right prop. Cape Dory spend alot of time and money on my boat in the summer of 1988 to fix some engine related and this was one of their problems. They came up with for my boat (280 Sport) with a 4 bladed 18x16 prop to get 3950 RPMs. My diesel mechanic who went to many Volvo schools agrees. I don't feel boost from the turbo till 3200 RPMs and cruise at 3600 RPMs with 2300 hours on the engine.

My CD 28 Flybridge (1988)had a 4 blade 18X17 and ran 3750-3800 rpm WOT. Walt's previous reply stated the Volvo WOT spec range correctly. You can just get your prop re-pitched to 17 and you should be fine. I think the origional prop was 3 blade 18X18. The 4 blade gives a little more speed with the same effective load on the engine.
