handrail removal CD25D

Post by Tim McCarty »

I need to re-bed the teak handrails on top of the cabin . I removed one of the wooden plugs to reveal what I thought was a wood screw but it turns as if it has a nut on the other side. To get to the other side I must remove the interior handrail. So before I tear up too much stuff I thought I should ask for some advise.
Thanks

Tim,

You are correct, the handrails are through bolted and the interior hand grips use the same fasteners. Use a small wood screw to remove the plugs. Most of the nuts will back off easily, but at least one will turn with the bolt, this will always be the one that you just can't reach from the top and bottom at the same time, so bring a friend when you tackle this otherwise straight forward job.

Tim - On my 25D, the interior handrails are installed from below with screws into the liner pedestals, and the exterior rails with separate bolts with nuts. When the interior rails are removed, you'll find holes in the liner pedestals through which the nuts are accessible.

Hi Bruce, Steve & Tim

Do either of you find that the screws Bruce mentions are/were striping out?

My were as the screws just went through about 1/8" of FRG. Ti took some work, but I drill a 1" hole in the vertical part of the "pedestals", replaced the screws with bolts, washers and nuts. I then plugged the holes with plastic "pop ins" like the ones that cover the fasteners where the coaming is attached to the cabin sides.

Does that make sense?

Now that Bruce and Bill mentioned it, I do recall that the interior and exterior handrails use a different fastener, but you still have to take off the interior ones as I said to get to the nuts for the exterior ones. I don't recall having a problem with the interior screws stripping out, but like on the electrical panel and other screws going into the liner, there is not much glass there so be gentle when retightening them.

Thanks fellas,
I think I'll remove the inside handrail and then check if the nuts can be removed without having to pull the outside plugs to hold the screw. If not, I'll R&R them but at least now I know what to expect.

Thanks again & Merry Christmas,
Tim
