CD30C- Prop Size
I have a 1984 CD30-C B plan, with the Universal Diesel Engine, I need to replace the prop. The boat is in the water, I would like to have the replacement prop on hand when I have the boat hauled.
I did a bottom job this summer and plan on hauling out, leaving her in the sling only to replace the prop, zinc and give her a good scrub.
The prop that is on the boat now, I believe to be a 13R11 is in pretty sad shape. I also think I have too much pitch. I can only get about 1700 rpm's, and feel less pitch will increase my rpm's.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance,
Jerry Albright

Jerry, although I do not know which engine or gear ratio you are running, nor the rpm range of it, I can say that I am running with a fresh 20 HP. Beta with a 2.13:1 gear ratio turning a13x9 three blade.
I will be upgrading prop this spring with a Variprop 4 blade 13x10 or 9 depending on results. These are easily adjusted in small increments, German made for small apertures.
Are you able to reach hull speed @1700rpm?
Output of engines tends to drop as they age.. (ring, valve seat wear Etc.) lowering the power/torque delivered to prop. I have seen props repitched to accomadate this.
Are you running two blade or three blade? I would guess you are over pitched.
Keep us posted

Jerry,
I recently installed a new engine,( Volvo D1-20) with ZF v - drive. New prop is a Michigan 3 blade 13L 12. I've been happy with it so far.

Jerry, Raven is also a 1984 model with the Universal engine. The engine seems to be able to get up to max RPMs and she has a three bladed 13" dia X 12" pitch prop. The prop is still in very good condition. I have tried removing it with no joy to be able to really polish it. What I do manage to do is dive on it numerous times during the summer to keep the growth to a minimum. Hope this helps, Steve.

Thanks for the input.
I bought this boat 6 months ago. The previous owners ( 2 brothers ) bought this boat in the Bahamas, with engine problems. One brother is a delivery boat captain the other owns a generator sales and service company.
They flew the parts over, rebuilt the engine and sailed her to Gulfport, Misssippi. The delivery boat captain owns a Morgan OI41, and tried to convert his power boating brother to a sailor. It did not work out, and they put the boat on the market after 1 year.
I checked the boat out , and negoitaed a price based on a satisfactory Sea Trial. The boat sailed great. but motoring was painfully slow, and we were only able to turn up about 1200 rpm's and do maybe 3 to 3.5 knots depending on the current. The following day we were able to dive on the boat and remove a 3 bladed prop covered in oyster shells. We replaced the prop with a spare 3 blade prop, the 13R11 I have on her now. After the prop swap we were able to get 1700 rpm's max, and do 5 to 5.5 knots .
I don't have an engine manual, but I think I read the Universal engine should be able to run about 2200 rpm's max and cruise at about 1800 rpm's.
The 13 R11 prop is a 3 Blade prop, with broad blades, I am no prop expert by any means, but I believe the Campbell Sailor prop I purchased for a previously owned CD27 had much narrower blades.
The prop on the boat now is in pretty sad shape, I just want to get the most out of the engine and new prop set up I can.
Smooth Sailing

Jerry,
I also have a CD30 (b) with a universal engine and sail in the same area as you do. For some reason, unknown to me, marine growth this last year seemed prolific. I had to clean my prop on a monthly basis to prevent exactly the symptoms you describe. With a clean prop all was well again for a few weeks. We have four CD30's in the Central Gulf Fleet that are sailing in the Mobile to Destin area. We would like to have you join our fleet, the more we get together the more we are learning from each other.

When I repowered last season, I had excellent luck with H & H propeller. They will ask for all sort of specs from you before recommending any prop.
You'll need engine specs such as HP, etc. Boat hull speed, displacement, etc. They will match one specifically for your boat. I picked up 1 knot of top speed with the repower & new prop!

I agree H&H does a good job, I used them also and have been pleased with their recommendation.
