Pin Strip
Good Morning to All and I hope the wx hasnt got the entire nation down!
I have a question concerning what I'll call the pin strip on my 25D. As you can see in the pic below, after 23 years it is starting to peal. I believe it is just "pin striping". Any comments? And where can I get more?
TIA

Cove Stripe
We replaced Pyxis' cove strip this spring. I got our local vinyl sign company to run a 25' 1" wide strip for us. The two cost $16 total. I used a blowdryer and a razor blade to remove the old stripe.
Looks 1000% better. We did leave the orignal CD and the ends as they looked just fine. The backside of the original stripe was clearly dark brown, but it looked black on the top side. We bought black and it matched perfectly. If I had been able to get dark brown I would have, but I didn't want to delay launch.

Apply it per the instructions
I had applied a replacement vinyl cove stripe on my CD330 and found that it did not hold up well at all. The following season I replaced it again, and half way through the season it was starting to peel off in a few locations. I contacted the manufacture and they indicated that the problem was caused by my application process. I had cleaned the hull and removed all old adhesive with acetone...which was fine. The problem occurred when I installed the new vinyl. I would pull the tape taught to ensure a straight cove stripe. This slight tension was the issue. The manufacture said any tension that stretches the tape more than 5% would have significant impact on the adhesive ability.
I know that others have had success with vinyl, but I gave up and went to paint. It looks great and I can pull the masking tape as tight as want to so I get a nice straight line.

Auto Parts Store
Hi : I went to an auto parts store and picked up brown vinyl tape for a lot less than the same thing at a marine store. I had no problems with adhesion, etc.
Check it out!
By the way, all you CD'ers with boats that don't have a sheer stripe, I strongly suggest you look into adding one. The sheer stripe adds a strong horizontal line to an observers eye, making your boat look longer. I think it's the most cost effective appearance upgrade you can add to your boat.

I don't have one, but you're right Tony, it looks sharp.

Vinyl strip looks super
I wholeheartedly agree with Tony's synopsis. A vinyl sheer line on my CD10 really dresses it up and appeals to any observer.

Thanks to Tony I've decided to buy some brown vinyl tape at my auto parts store. Anything to make my boat looking longer and classier is worth doing. What length do I need and do you think I can apply the tape while the boat is in the water?
Within the the unlocked homes of the Swedish villages on the shores of the Baltic around the rocks sings the sea.
I like the idea of adding a Cove Stripe. I found a picture of a Cape Dory Cove Strip on the Good Old Boat website.

How would you create the "CD" and the bow & stern arrow head details?

We just cut them out of tape which is what was on the boat when we got her. We don't know if it was original. An alternative would be one of those places that makes boat lettering. A pair of CD's would not cost much.D Rush wrote:I like the idea of adding a Cove Stripe. I found a picture of a Cape Dory Cove Strip on the Good Old Boat website.

Vigor Stripe
I can't find a picture and I don't know the correct term but another good look, especially for smaller CDs, is the type of stripe John Vigor has used on his boats. It is a solid band of color about 6" wide that goes all the way up to the rubrail but stops short of the bow and transom. It makes a boat look sleeker by making the sheerline appear longer and closer to the water.
