Thanks for the great thread. I too am sick of the back rests falling off underway and stepping all over them at night. This is definitely one of those "why didn't I think of that" solutions.

For once there is an upgrade with minimal cost - a few pillows from Pier 1! And even I can handle unscrewing the backboards.

Of course I have to find a way to spend some money. So I'm now thinking that since on a 25D I only use the quarter berth for storage and I've already removed that cushion. And with the two back rests gone, I'm down to three counting the little guy that tucks into the port bulkhead opening. Now I can upgrade my cushions at a fraction of the cost and still have some money left over for food.

I was so impressed with Andy adding the ash strips that I'm going to post separately to ask a few questions. Boy will that set off the interior of a 25D!

For what it's worth, I control my cushions with a strip of velcro attached to the backboard and the back of the cushion. No problem with heeling whatsoever. Personally, I wouldn't remove them. It all boils down to personal preference.

My cushions have fabric "tabs" with snap fasteners, which go over the top of backrests and attach to the backside of the backrests.

I added slide bolts that are used to hold backrests in upright position, and slide bolts that can hold the backrest in horizontal position, which creates huge shelves/counters that I have found very useful.

We have noticed the snaps on the other side of the backrests and couldn't figure out what they were for. Our cushions don't have said snaps.

The throw pillows we bought at Pier 1 were a little taller (standing up) than the space between the berth and the bottom of the shelf. So you can compress them a bit and push them into that space. The tension keeps them from falling out in most conditions. That was the underway mode.

At night (we did not use them for sleeping) they went into the quarter berth, swapping out for the sleeping pillows and sleeping bags.

On long trips, the quarter berth was full of plastic totes of food, cases of drinks, etc.; so, at least early in the trip, the throw pillows, one on top of the other, went on the galley counter at night.

When I replaced my cushions about 3 years ago I shopped around and got by far the best price from a local mom & pop furniture reupholstery shop. They were very experienced at building boat cushions and beat all the boat/canvas specialists by 30-50% in price.
BTW...my hull #167 never had seat back cushions that I know of...could it have been an option from the factory?

I went over to a nearby marine cushion shop to get a quote, just to have a reference point. Haven't got the quote yet. When I get it I'll start to do what you did and see if I can find some experienced people who can do the job without charging the "marine premium". I wonder if in fact the back cushions were an option.
