Soda Blasting

Post by miguel mascaros »

Hi Leo.....
Sorry it has taken this long getting back to you about ...
Be careful with soda blasting....
While watching my friend boat being blasted, it seemed a bit aggressive and the final result was a very clean bottom but also it removed the gelcoat....
Now.... my friend plan was to clean old antifouling paint material and since he has more money than time, soda blasting appealed to him as fast and easy way to go.....
Well, so far his decision ended up with....
Barrier coat application and since the boat topsides were alwgrip or some similar paint wich was also affected by the blasting and should have to be redone....
Lost a sailing season....
Of course at this point he regrets not using a bit of elbow grease instead of blasting ....
And there are some questions about the degree of skills required to do the right job and who is doing it....
We all agree soda blasting is enviromentaly friendly....
Finally our boats are painted with toxic materials and put in the water.......
Cheers/Mike
