cleaning the bronze

Post by Jack Burke »

If you want it to look like it just came out of the factory try 14 muriatic acid to 34 water and a toothbrush. Just scrub lightly and IMMEDIATELY SPRAY WITH PLENTY OF WATER!!. Be careful not to let it run on the bright work!!

I use a light but complete application of Lanocote. It is distributed by Forespar. It is sold by West Marine in an aerosol. I use the paste type that is supplied in a small plastic tub. Some people may want to try the aerosol, I haven't. You have to special order the tub version from West, they don't stock it on the shelf.

Apply it liberally with a rag to cleaned bronze then wipe off any excess so the bronze doesn't feel greasy. Works very well for a long time, doesn't wash off. Bronze will look great.

Muriatic Acid is used to clean brown rings out of toilets among other things. It is generally available at any hardware store or plumbing shop. Be careful where you store it as it tends to bubble past the cap and leave a ring around the base of the bottle. I wouldn't throw it in a cockpit locker as it's very caustic, tends to leak from it's container and should be treated with respect. It's also used to dissolve the urine cyrstals out of the hoses on your head. Urine reacts with salt water and forms crystals that ultimately plug up your head. The cure is to pour a little in your bowl and pump it through your system flushing well afterward.
