Stanchions - CD-36

Post by Ken Coit »

Anyone want to guess at the dimensions of the stanchions on our CD-36, serial 84, built in September of '82? I will measure it next time I get down to the coast, but I would be interested in whether they are the same from one 36 to another. I thought Rig Rite would have the info and be able to quote a price, but they want dimensioned drawings before they will quote. It would be convenient if they were stocked by WM.

Comment, and similar question: Spartan also carries "original Cape Dory stanchions". Anyone know if rigrite's or spartan's actually match the ones on the boat? Was there a year-to-year difference?

I have measured Parfait's stanchion and created a drawing of Parfait's stanchion, without the bend. Let me know if anyone needs it. 24 1/2 inches long, 1 inch OD, 1/4 inch through hole at 12 inches from base, 1/2 inch through hole 24 inches from base, 10-24 threaded hole (one side) 2 inches from base and 90 degrees around tube from plane of lifeline holes. The stanchion is filled with a resin from about 10 inches from the base to the top. Tubing appears to be 0.049 thick stock, but we have not measured. West Marine carries 6 ft. lengths for $40.

Rig Rite quoted $89 plus $12 S&H; Spartan never replied even though I was emailing them through Robinhood. Our favorite metal sculptor, Thomas Sayre of Clearscapes, here in Raleigh, was able to straighten ours. We will fill the remainder of the stanchion with a resin and a steel rod before remounting it to help counteract the potential loss of strength. He also does other interesting buildings, memorials, etc.
