AutoHelm 4000+ in CD-30...

AutoHelm 4000+ in CD-30...
I'm in the process of installing an AutoHelm 4000+ wheel pilot on Hanaleis' helm. Has anyone else done this? Where did you mount the control box? I'm thinking of mounting it on the aft bulkhead of cockpit, centered on the bulkhead. Also, the standard 4000+ control box is a surface mount(that stands proud of the surface by about an inch), but I see that AutoHelm also makes a flush mount control box. Has anyone used a flush mount, and how did you get it?
The wheel drive ring, that mounts to the wheel, ends up about 1/4" from the aft edge of the throttle lever. The throttle lever is still usable, but it is close. Does anyone know if Edson makes a modified throttle lever (bent) that would replace the standard lever?
Any ideas/opinions would be appreciated....oh, by the way! I purchased the unit from Defender Industries in Waterford, Ct for $887, the cheapest that I could find, WM wanted 999.95 for the same item.

Dave - I replaced my original hard plastic throttle lever with an Edson stainless model. It has a slight bend to it and looks much better than the original. I am sorry that I do not recall the price of the replacement lever, but that usually indicates it was not that much.

No, it's not the throttle lever that is the problem, it's the forward/neutral/reverse shift lever that I need to see if Edson has a modified one. I do agree with you though on the stainless lever for throttle control, on my brothers' CD-30B that plastic lever broke once when we were going into a tough docking situation in a strong current, ended up clamping a pair of lock-on pliers on it temporairly to get us to the dock! The metal one is better than the original and I may replace that also. Thanks for your comments....

Edson makes replacement throttle and shift levers in stainless. Whether they bend in the right direction, I am not sure, but I think so. You can order their full free catalog via: http://www.edsonintl.com/marine/index.htm
If you really have money to spend, they have a single lever control too.

If your shift lever is horizontally mounted forward of the wheel's hub and the throttle is a fore & aft arrangement next to the compass binnacle, THEN...
Edson makes a longer shift lever which doesn't interfer with the wheel (as the original lever DOES). Edson suggests a shift limiter with the longer lever to prevent damage due to excess leverage.
If you need further info let me know. I can dig out the part numbers. I bought the items after speaking with Hank Green of Edson at the Annapolis Boat Show. This information was for the the CD330. OBTW Autohelm's people didn't have a clue.

That extended shift lever is just what I am looking for! Funny thing is, I called Edson Tech. services yesterday, and the guy I talked to said they didn't make a modified lever. If you can find the part numbers, I sure would appreciate it. Is the lever you are talking about just longer, or is it also bent forward a little? Thanks for your help...

Hi, Just grabbed my Edson Cat. and the part number for a 10" shift lever (they call it a clutch handle) is "960 A 1158" The cost is
38 bucks! Looks like the standard handle is 6" long.

Edson part number 960 A1158 is a 10" shift lever and replaces 960 A1195 (6"). The "Clutch Travel Limiter" is a stop to prevent "over shifting" order number 914-45-2 (be careful when installing this part, it can easily fall down the pedestal).
I installed these items on our CD330 last year. The longer handle was recommended by Edson to clear the ST4000's drive ring. Please verify with Edson that you have the same clutch & throttle control. Try "info@edsonintl.com" I spoke with Hank Green (Greene?) General Manager, who knew the part numbers without checking the catalog. Most impressive.
