Quarter inch stuffing ..

I believe the shaft is 1 inch diameter. Cape Dory used this size for most of their boats. The stuffing that was in the box when we bought the boat was 1/4", and on replacing it, this seemed to fit right, i.e., quite snugly.

Thad,

I believe that all Cape Dories use the same shaft, shaft log, and stuffing box. At any rate, Parfait's shaft is one inch in diameter and uses 1/4 inch flax. She is an '83 model CD-36 built in '82.

The smallest corkscrew removal tool I could find on the shelf at West Marine, did not fit, so I had to squeeze it to a smaller diameter with locking pliers. The 1/4 inch flax is also a tight fit; you may need to cut it a little short and certainly will need to pack in each layer separately by screwing the packing nut completely in.

I think you can find a user's manual on the CCDO web site. It has a lot of tid bits and specs that you will find useful.
