A couple of questions for Cape Dory 28 owners

A couple of questions for Cape Dory 28 owners
We are looking at possibly buying a 28.
The current holding tank is a 3 gallon jerry jug. It is in the bottom of the hanging locker. For those of you who have a retro fitted holding tank, (beyond a 3, or even 5, gallon jerry jug), where have you put it? How large have you been able to fit in? Where did you get the tank? Any advice on fitting this in?
Also, it appears there is no reasonable way to fit a bimini without moving the mainsheet to the cabintop. Anyone done this? Thoughts or comments?

18 Gallon

Most CD28 have an 18 gallon holding tank under the V berth, as mine does. Link here: http://www.yachttantalus.com/head.htm
And yeah, a bimini will be tough unless you move the traveler up top, as I did.

Holding Tank Info
My 28 has an 18 gal tank made by Ronco Plastics (model B486) and is located under the V-berth. I replaced ours last year because one of the fittings was cracked and could not be repaired.
That is a job I only want to do once.
As for a Bimini, I have seen small ones attached to the dodger that would allow an aft traveler; however, I am also considering moving my traveler above the cabin top.

24 gallon in V-berth
We’re just finishing a complete plumbing refit on our 83 CD28—plastic on all tanks was fatigued and fittings were breaking off. Kracor still has the molds for our original 24-gallon vee-berth head holding tank and two 30-gallon water tanks. We ordered replacements through Lewis Marine in Ft. Lauderdale—saved several hundred dollars over ordering direct from Kracor. Model & serial numbers were on the tags still attached to our original tanks so ordering was easy. The intake fitting on the new head holding tank broke off during installation—not enough glue on the fitting. Wasn’t worth the hassle of sending back to Kracor so we had it fixed ourselves.
Also replaced the toilet (cracked base, leaky pump). Lots of smelly overripe broccoli odor last year so replaced all hoses with Sealand Odorsafe. Very tough to work with—especially connecting to the Tee fitting in the space-constricted forward vee area under the chain locker. We ended up hiring our friend Rich—a talented professional boat builder and fellow CD 28 owner—to do the holding tank installation. He also replaced and connected the water tank hoses. Thanks to him we’ll actually see the water this year.
Turns out most of the smell was emanating from the manual bilge pump the boatyard installed for pumping waste overboard. Replacing it with the more expensive version that is made for sanitary waste.
Another tank set up: Rich has a glassed-in tank in the bilge under the engine. I don’t know the capacity. He has a 1985 CD28.
I think I saw a 28 with a bimini and traditional transom sheet setup on yachtworld.com. But it looked like they might just use it when anchored. You can learn a lot about how other CDers are setting up their boats by studying the photos on the yachtworld listings.
Hope this helps

CD28 w/bimini on yachtworld.com
Here's the CD 28 that I saw. Looks like they also moved the forestay forward on the bowsprit to turn it into a cutter--or is it a double headsail sloop?
Go to yachtworld.com and search for Cape Dory 28. It's the the following listing:
28' Cape Dory Cutter 1984 26,900 S U S D FG Corpus Christi, TX

Thanks to all for some excellent ideas. Angela and Tom, I
was looking at that Texas boat at the same time you were, ;>). You are right about the unusual head sail config. I emailed th broker and asked if the bimini was usable under sail. I'll let you know what they say, if they reply.

Nice solution. I assume it's your boat. I noticed that neither your bimini set-up nor the one on yachtworld includes a dodger. Is it a choice between one or the other, and if it is, why?
How much standing headroom is under your bimini?
Thanks,
A
Nice job and
I would have the same questions as Angela, could you get a dodger on there and how much headroom is there. Holly and I are both under 5'7", so we don't need much. ;>)
May I assume you can trim the main as needed with the bimini up?
Thanks for your picture and any thoughts you might have.

CD28 bimini
Sorry, the photo is not of our boat, I borrowed it off the web. That bimini setup is what I am thinking of doing.

CD 28 1977 Binini,dodger,and holding tank
I am the original owner of a 77 CD 28. I have the original holding tank which is located on the port side under the v birth ,capasity about 5 gal. It continues to work well ,but is a bit limited in capasity. I did replace the head and hoses after 30 years, made a big difference, no smell!
I have a bimini ,that I bought from west marine, mounted it reversed close to my dodger this leaves enough clearance for the rear mounted mainsheet. This configuration, however.limits the action of the winch handle allowing only half turns on the winch. Since I use my club footed working sail most of the time this is not a big problem.

Paul thanks for your reply
That sounds like something I could do. Do you by any chance remember the size of the bimini?

Bimini Size\ CD28
I just happened to have the cloth covering for my Bimini at home, the size laying flat on the floor is 42x73. When supported on the tubing the size my be reduced. It fits with a 2 inch overlap of the Dodger.
It was made in NY by an outfit Named "Taylor" I bought from West Marine about 6 years ago.
