Hi all,
Have just bought a CD25 with three pals. This question could well be about shared ownership, but we've done that before.
Instead, we need to figure out how to get the boat from the lower Hudson River to Burlington VT on Lake Champlain. Any opinions on the most timely, cost effective, and reliable alternatives are very welcome.
Ultimately, we'd like to have the boat on a trailer, but a $5,500 quote from Triad for a new trailer has us rethinking the math. Do people lend trailers?
We could also keep the boat in the water the whole way. I've been up the Hudson and through the Champlain Canal before and would love to repeat the trip. Time is an issue, though.
Fast, Cheap or Good...pick 2, I guess.
Thanks,
John

Transporting a CD25
Tom:
Check with these people. I used them to move my CD 25D from Rochester to Long Island. Tom, at Lighthouse told me that he used to deliver for Cape Dory. Note that you can get a better price if you can adapt to their schedule. Also lifting the boat on-to and off-of the truck needs to be arranged for by you with the marina or boatyard at each end. Good luck.

Sail it!
If you guys can take some vacation, the best way to get the boat from the lower Hudson to Lake Champlain is to sail it.
Sail straigint up the Hudson (take a few days to do it) to Troy, NY. There you'll have the mast unstepped. From there you'll continue a short way farther northward until you reach a dam and the Federal Lock. The marked channel passes beneath the Rte. 7 fixed bridge, then along the west side of Adams Island and then enters the lock on the east side of the channel. Contact "Troy Federal Lock" on VHF Ch. 13 to request a lock-through.
It's 60+ miles from Troy to Lake Champlain and I think there are 12 locks. Anyway, it will be a scenic and interesting trip if you can manage it.
Hope you can sail it rather than towing/trucking the boat.
Fair winds,
Cathy

I can't think of a nicer trip to take than up the Hudson to the canals and then into Lake Champlain. As Cathy says, you can sail it to the Troy Federal Lock but you need to unstep the mast before you get to Troy. You can get it taken care of earlier at the Catskill Marina on Catskill Creek (http://www.catskillmarina.com/) on the west side of the river.
Then it's a motor trip up the upper Hudson to Hudson Falls and then take the Champlain Canal to Lake Champlain. For scenery and just plain relaxing travel, you'll love it. You'll see lots of wildlife along the way too.
But you have to know that your boat is ready for the trip, especially the engine. The tide goes up to Albany and you may not be able to sail part of it when the wind is on vacation. You'll need a dependable engine.
