It may be time to repower Puffin. It seems like my options are limited.
Although the Beta Marine is a great motor, I suspect getting parts will be difficult. There is an awesome Yanmar dealer and service business in my area called Precision Marine in New Rochelle; if I repower I'll use them. These guys spent hours with me looking up and finding copper washers and small parts. Yesterday, it was a bleeder screw. He has a good running YSB8 that he took out a boat that he will sell for a great price. Less than $1500. (the persin needed more power) But then there is the install. I could probably handle that myself. I'm just nervous about the fine tuning. They told me it would be an easy fit. But then again it also is an old motor and will I be making all sorts of trips for old parts that break down.
The thought of a newer, more powerful, quieter motor is pretty appealing. But what is the conventional wisdom? Is the 20 hp really necessary? Or can I use the 14? I'm also about to embark on my kids college tuition, so every penny counts.
Btw hello to everyone. It has been awhile sincew I've been around here.
Thanks in advance for any input.
CD 27 repowering dilemma

CD-27 and Betamarine
Hi Jim,
I vote for the Betamarine 14 h.p. for the CD-27. With the small propeller aperture and subsequent limitation on prop diameter there's no way you can couple 20 h.p. to the water. 14 h.p. is plenty of power.
Rhiannon has a Westerbeke 13 and a 2-bladed Michigan sailor prop that has been carefully tweaked to fit the power curve of the engine. It's all I've ever needed in 24 years of use.
The biggest advantage to the Beta is the service points are all on the front of the engine. There's no need to do service "by braille" as required most other powerplants (especially the W-13).
Also, the Beta U.S. distributor is 10 miles from here and he has a great supply of parts and quick delivery to anywhere. The rumor that Beta parts are hard to get is heresay. Couple all this with new engine warranty and I'd go for the Beta myself.
Repowering is something I'm strongly considering as it's getting increasingly harder for me as I "attain maturity" to get around the W-13 to do the routine stuff -- checking oil, anything back of the engine, etc. Hmmmm ........wanna' work a deal on a W-13 with 1100 hrs on it?
Hope this helps.

The Betamarine is a marinized Kubota diesel so parts are readily available. Here is their US website for parts:

Our yard is an authorized Beta Marine dealer. I had a 13.5 put in my CD25D and a fellow CDer had a 13.5 put in his CD 27. We both love the motor. I know from talking to the mechanic that the install was a little bit more involved in the 27. They did a beautiful job with both boats.
Good luck.
