Refinishing sole
What is the best "varnish" treatment for a T and H sole in a CD 36 (or any other for that matter). I am looking for high gloss but not one that you will loose your footing on.... is that too much to ask?

Re: Refinishing sole
There is a product called "Ultimate Sole" which I think fits your needs, looks good and has great traction. Though I think it is basicly gymnasium floor varnish, I have wondered if one could buy this product without a marine label on, as the Ultimate Sole product is rather spendy.Richard Schattman wrote:What is the best "varnish" treatment for a T and H sole in a CD 36 (or any other for that matter). Captains Varnish
I refinished Mokita's sole with 2 coats of Captains Varnish 4 years ago and it has held up great. No issue with slipping or wearing and it looks as good as the day I applied it. This year I intend to put another coat of Captains on the sole after a bit of light sanding and using a tack cloth.

Cabin Sole Refinishing
Captains Varnish is a very good treatment for soles and all other marine wood.
Russell, maybe you are referring to McCloskey's Gym Seal tung oil varnish. Also an excellent choice.
There has been some skeptical criticism of Gym Seal concerning UV rays and salt water. Most of the negativism has been dispelled by the fact that it is used on half a million dollar Hinckleys
Why not read for yourselves a discussion with what others who have used Gym Seal have to say about it, pro and con.
The link doesn't seem to be working, so type in Gymseal (one word) and scroll down to "Cabin Sole Refinishing [Archive]-Pearson Ariel Association Forums"
Have a good weekend.

polyurethane
Richard,
I refinished mine with oil-based poly this winter based on other's success. I am very pleased with the results. Four coats hardly dented a $15 gallon can from Home Depot.

Sealing the wood?
I have looked at the Ultimate Sole site and they are recommending a few coats of their sealer before the top coats. I have been considering using some epoxy sealer before a home floor product Called Lasts and Lasts. Has anyone tried epoxy before some of the other products or is it a waste of time? My thinking is that the T&H only has one good cleaning sanding worth of thickness and the epoxy would insure it didn't need to be done again. We all want shining souls, Steve.

sole refinish
One more idea, on my CD33 I use a water based sealer and a two part topcoat called BASIC. It is used on gym and commercial wood floors. It is applied with a paint pad, looks like milk when you first apply it and does have a nice gloss. I found it at CrossCut (a wood store) in Portland, OR.

Ultimate Sole
I'll be using Ultimate Sole on our salon table as well as the cabin sole. I'll be refinishing the table first (may wait until next year for the cabin sole) and will let you know how it turns out.
