Resealing deck to hull joint

Post by Harry Green »

I've owned 2 Cape Dorys a 28' and my current 25D. I love everything about both except the tendency for water intrusion at the toe rail. Has anyone ever removed the teak toe rail and fiberglassed the join?

Are you positive it is the hull joint and not some other penetrations? Stanchion bases, cleats and such are not too bad a job, Steve.

joint leaks

Post by Boyd »

Hi All:

Sounds like you are about to kill ants with a sledge hammer.

I had leaks from both the rub and toe rails on my boat. The leaks were from the screws that hold those teak peices on and penetrate the hull. Its just a matter of removing them and rebedding with emphasis on getting caulk into the screw holes. One clue that this is the source is the streaks on the hull sides at aproximately 12" o.c.

I have never had a leak that I would attribute to the hull deck joint itself.

Harry,

Fred B. glassed both the inside and outside if memory serves me.

He's just sailed westabout via the Panama Canal and has a great website that details the project(s) and subsequent passages.

I intend to glass the joint some point if I embark on longer passages.

Glassing the exterior would involve painting the decks and topsides, so I'd agree with Steve and Boyd to consider through-bolts and toerail screws for leaks. That would be a lot easier than glassing, fairing, painting.

Good Luck-
