Re: Paging Al Leveque; paging Al Leveque

Sorry to be so late in responding. I haven't been following the board as diligently as in the past.

The deck non-skid finish is beige. It has never been painted. The beige is the original molded-in finish.

For sale 1983 CD33

We have decided to sell our 1983 CD33, Athena. She is lightly equipped but has been the "boat" we wanted, never wanted a yacht. The mainsail was new in 2012 and the Yanmar 3YM30 was installed in 2006. The only electronics is a radar. The working jib is in good condition as are the storm ji...

Re: cape dory 33 wheel to tiller conversion

When we changed from a CD25 to the CD33 I missed the tiller. Instead of changing though, I changed the wheel to one with external spokes and found it comfortable to steer from the windward seat, much as I would have sat for a tiller. The spokes allowed me to quickly secure the wheel when I wanted to...

Re: Sailing outside of Nantucket

I would be concerned with the shifting of the shoals and the difficulty of locating and avoiding them during slack tides. North of Pollock Rip seems more predictable if you stay a bit offshore but the Nantucket shoals extend quite far out and would seem unlikely to save time. I've been there a few t...

Re: Cape Dory 25 Outboard Well

Removing the tiller may be the key. We had a 77 CD25 and used an Evinrude 6hp engine with the tiller removed. We added a short throttle cable that we could reach in to adjust speed. We (I) removed the engine after every use and stored it on foam in the starboard seat locker. Never had trouble gettin...

Re: Repowering a CD33 or CD330

We repowered our CD33 with a Yanmar 3YM30 that came with a Hurth 2.62:1 transmission. The changeover was messy. The metal engine mount had to be ground out. We had wooden stringers glassed in for engine mount. We had the work done by engine and fiberglass professionals. Took the opportunity to insta...

Re: Marine head maintenance

If I recall correctly, the head mistress frowns upon using any oil in the head because it floats on the surface of the liquid contents and blocks the oxygen needed for bacteria to work its magic.

Another vote for buntline hitch

Another advantage over splicing is the ease of alternating end for end from season to season. I think splicing is fun but now I save it for mooring and anchor lines over a thimble. Another vote too for long jib sheets with a larkshead.

Happy Holidays to all.

Were they roll, pitch, and yaw? Sometimes we go forward, aft, to port, or to starboard. We also go up and down. Would all these be considered valid?

When I did it years ago, I did it crudely with a hacksaw and cable clamps, etc. If I were to do it again I would contact an engine dealer that sells controls and ask how to hook it up.

If I recall correctly, the teak cover also blocked the splashing that sometimes managed to get up the well when underway. I don't remember how I did it on the Evinrude we had but I removed the tiller and rigged a throttle cable instead.

Another North Shore yard is Dion's in Salem. I haven't had fiberglass work done by them but have had other work and found them to be very capable. They are a full service facility with inside workspace as well. I have had fiberglass work done by Dennis Doucette of Ipswich who was very capable and re...

Another factor

to consider is the ability to maneuver. An overpowered boat gets tough to handle. One of my earliest memories in our former CD25 was having to move the boat in a horrendous blow. I reefed the main to as small as most storm sails and found myself comfortably sailing as though it was an 8 knot breeze.

If you do leave it in be sure to clean it periodically. We left ours in the first year and the cooling passages were completely blocked by marine life. We noticed that the mussels growing inside were far too large to flush out. They must have entered as seeds and grew from there. We had a 6hp and th...
