Enjoy the rest of your trip

David,

I really enjoyed reading of your trip so far. That hail storm you were in was bigger than you might think. There was a car dealership in Exeter, NH that literally had their inventory totaled from the hail. It must have been really loud in the salon with hail hitting the deck.

Come to Portsmouth!

Clay, You're welcome to take the helm on Concord Coach any time. Of course, you'll have to pry my hands off the tiller first  . My mooring is a stone's throw from Prescott Park. I know Portsmouth isn't exactly in your back yard, but it's closer than many. Send me a PM if you're interested. Carl

Clarification

I just re-read my own post, and Paul's response to it. I really didn't mean to suggest foregoing the survey altogether (although I have to admit that's sure what it sounded like). I guess what I really meant was, the 30-minute survey you can do yourself will tell you if you should walk away. If, bas...

Read Don Casey

Jsin, Don Casey has written several books on sailboat maintenance. His book "This Old Boat" is a classic. He also has a book that's actually a collection of eight smaller books. I have it, but for the life of me, I can't remember the title. He has an excellent discussion about a 30-minute ...

Whale pump

Hi Bill, Adding to what Dick said, I have the Whale Urchin and I'm very happy with it. I can echo Dick's comment on the lack of space in which to connect the hose where it exits at the motor well. Make sure you have all the tools you need before you go in there and have a second person around just i...

Why so much power?

Do you really need all that horse power? A CD25 isn't exactly a motor-sailor. Granted, I don't know what conditions you sail in, but I use a 6HP Nissan 4-stroke and I'm very happy with its performance. I sail out of Portsmouth Harbor which has currents that can exceed 6 knots. I try to avoid that ki...

Summer Reading List

Okay, Independence Day weekend is just about here :D . Time to start thinking about that summer reading list. I'm interested in what nautical books people might be reading this summer. Mind you, this is a summer reading list. Nothing heavy here. Leave Chapman, Rousmanier, and Don Casey at home. Just...

Passing it on.

I'll be more than happy to pass on copies. In Dider's PM to me, he said the information is a bit chaotic because he just gathered the information. Not having seen it yet, I don't know how big the job is. I'm pretty good with Adobe. My intent is to take what Didereaux gives me and make a bookmarked P...

Practice

Tom, Practice this maneuver several times. You'll get into a rhythm. It's not hard, once someone explains it in terms like Tod did. Maybe once you become proficient you won't want to stay ashore when the wind exceeds 15 knots. Seriously, you're missing out on a lot of great sailing. Your boat can ha...

Don't let this happen to you.

I witnessed quite a spectacle yesterday, when I went to the marina for my shakedown cruise (which went flawlessly by the way). This guy was moving his boat down to the Travel Lift to be launched. He had already raised the mast and somehow failed to notice those great big orange balls on the overhead...

Not to rain on the 25D parade, but . . .

Going back to Robert's original post, you said that you're mostly interested in day sailing with an occasional overnight, and that you have limited sailing experience. The 25D may be more boat than you need. You don't say anything about your experience with engine maintenance. There's something to b...

Boatlife Lifecalk

Lee, I'm not really up on the chemistry of different caulking compounds. I recommend you search the archives and you'll find much discussion about the different types of caulks and their various applications. I use Boatlife Lifecalk as a bedding compound, which is a polysulfide based caulk. It comes...

Hatch Cover

Lee, It took me a while to figure out exactly what you were describing, but I think I have it now  . Sorry, I'm a bit slow sometimes. I believe you're talking about the screws that go through the flange of the turtle shell (i.e. stationary piece of the two-piece companionway slide) and into th...

Since no one else has responded . . .

Stephen, I was assuming one of our more seasoned veterans would respond. Replacing the seacocks really is not a difficult job, and you do need to think about re-sale value. An educated buyer would have the boat surveyed and would use the lack of valves as leverage in lowering your asking price. Also...

Jodie,

What the others have said is true. Push your boat as hard as you feel comfortable, and then push just a little bit more. Confidence is borne of experience. If you stay ashore every time the wind pipes up, you'll miss out on a lot of great sailing. Just remember to reef early if you feel the boat is ...
