Ground tackle

Last fall I pulled my mooring anchor up because the harbor was being dredged. During the process, the light chain parted and findinding the mooring was a major problem. It finally came up when it was caught in the cutting head of the dredge. I will replace all the shackles, swivel, and chain but thi...

Hindsight

I bought my CD 28 for ten thousand....it looked good and I am very happy with it. In hindsight, I would pay more and avoid having to do the work. I rebuilt the engine (MD2B) and eventually repowered. I replaced standing rigging. I replaced the sails. I had some work done on the hull. Upgraded sanita...

Two fuel tanks under the port and starboard lockers....the engine is a volvo penta ... mine had the md2b which was 23 hp...I replaced it with the BetaMarine last year and it is great. I also replaced my fuel tanks with new ones...the old ones were a disaster.

Good idea!

Thanks! I will try contacting them on the video phone. As you can imagine, when we sail we need to use the correct terms. So many non-sailors think we can just say things like : "Grab that thing and bring it around the thing up front then tie it to the thing in the back"......just doesn't ...

Nautical Signs

I hope this question is not too far out, but I post it with all serious intent. I often sail with a Deaf crew. My Deaf friends are very fast learners on board and tend to be very good sailors. While my ASL skills are not too bad, I am not a native signer (I am hearing albeit I do wear hearing aids)....

Thanks Cathy

I will check it out...I really like all the different kinds of splicing and other marlinspike work I can do with triple strand. By the way, I have always admired the way you did the teak on Realization when strolling around Lockwood's. I obtained a couple of cans of the stuff you recommended....hope...

Good suggestions...thank you all!

I am very happy to get some good sources for 3 strand line....I went to several suppliers in Annapolis with no luck...I thought for sure that if it was not to be had in Annapolis, then I wouldn't find it anywhere. This board is such a great source of information! Thanks again everybody.... ....now, ...

Whatever happened to triple strand halyards?

I am replacing the main halyard on Peapod (CD 28). It was badly chafed where it slapped against the steaming light and also where it rests on the masthead sheaves. It had to go. I have measured its length at about 70' but NOWHERE can I find the triple strand dacron line that I love so much. All my m...

Yikes!

Get rid of it! You are lucky you didn't lose the prop and damage the hull! You will be happy with a sturdy SS shaft!

bronze to stainless

I had the same concerns when I repowered. I have been operating with a SS shaft for years now and I am very happy with it....it works great with the pss dripless which I highly recommend.

Mermaid or Cruisair . . . which is better?

Thanks for the advice....it sounds like Chuck has better insight into these relays than I do. So now I am trying to decide which a/c to install: Mermaid or Cruisair? I would be very interested in what people think of these two.

Noisy relay

Thank you for advice...I will investigate Cruisair as well. I liked the Mermaid unit because of the small footprint and the fact that they are bundled into a single unit. The contactor sound you describe can be a problem with mechanical relays. You may want to try mounting the relay so that it is no...

I am planning on a self contained unit with at least one duct running to the V-berth. I would only use it at the dock at 115 V...no room for a genset on my CD 28. I am looking at both the cooling only and the cooling with reverse cycle heating. The boat is used mainly for coastal cruising. I am not ...

Need advice on air conditioning

There is nothing like a cool dry interior on a hot humid day when I'm at a dock. I have a Cruisair Carry On which I have just put on Ebay. I just don't like lugging it on board - I want to install A/C onboard. Right now, I am looking at Mermaid units...there are three that I am considering....9.000 ...
