Minnesota Typhoons, etc.

Scott, I see by your first post that we are fellow Minnesotans. There are many CDs on Twin Cities lakes (4-5 Typhoons on Lake Harriet, for example), but typically not many on the market at any one time. I own a Typhoon Daysailer, which doesn't have a cabin. The benches are 8 feet long. Another optio...

1985

Congrats on the new boat. Looks like it was manufactured in 1985, based on info from this Web page (http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.html). I have one season under my belt with a 1979 Daysailer. It's a great boat.

Thanks, Tim

Pix would be great. I am guessing that shifting the pull angle from the winch makes a huge difference. When I loaded my boat this fall it ended up farther aft on the trailer than I had wanted, though the tongue weight still seemed adequate.

More details, please

Tim, I recently loaded my Typhoon daysailer purchased this past spring on her trailer for the first time. Ran into all the challenges you highlighted. Would you mind describing in more detail the keel guides, the bar and pulley system above the winch, etc.? Any other ideas on how to solve these issu...

Daysailor sails,

Clark, The sails on my daysailor are in good condition, but will be interested in what you learn about where to have them replaced. After taking the boat out of the water in the next week or two, I plan to and send them to SailCare for cleaning, etc. BTW, thanks for your advice in your earlier post ...

Typhoon daysailer/flotation volume estimate

FWIW: Made rough measurements/estimate of the amount of flotation foam in my Typhoon daysailer this past weekend: about 30-32 cubic feet of foam. Today's pourable foams provide about 60 lbs of flotation per cubic foot. Don't know if this applies to the foam used by Cape Dory, but if it does, looks l...

Thanks, John

Appreciate the advice and encouragement. The voice of experience is very reassuring. Your comments underscore my sense that foul-weather gear is critical for a safe and enjoyable venture with our Typhoon on Lake Superior. Even on a gorgeous day, L. Superior spray can quickly go from exhilarating to ...

Buckets, etc.

Thanks, all, for your thoughts. Getting pooped/swamped is my biggest concern. I agree that panic and two buckets for my son and me may provide the largest bailing capacity. But am considering mounting a manual bilge pump ahead of the bench on the port side as an assist. Noted a similar installation ...

Ty Daysailer/preparing for bigger water

I am considering trailering my Ty Daysailer (non-self-bailing cockpit/full foam flotation) to the Apostle Islands area of Lake Superior next summer for day sailing and island overnights. Am seeking advice on hardening the boat for bigger water. I will not be venturing outside of the islands into the...

Thanks, flotation, etc.

Thanks for the welcome, Oswego John. My daysailer also has foam flotation. I believe that much of the bow, the space beneath the seats, the enclosed area at the stern (I know there is a term for this, but it escapes me) and the space between the liner and the hull (at least at the chain plate port) ...

Sorry, Winthrop

Winthrop, Sorry for being Mr. Anonymous. After lurking on this site for almost two years, it's time to register (hopefully it "took") and begin contributing, or at least ask questions. Your posts over the years are among those that convinced me that a Ty was the boat for me and my family. ...
