CD27 Stern Rail Upgrades

Sadly, Remedy is in need of a new stern rail (and part of the starboard rub rail, and the taffrail trim, and the mount for the dinghy outboard). It seems something went "bump" in the night, or over the weekend, or during one of the oft-observed sail-through-the-mooring-field adventures we ...

Mike:

My mast is down, but I won't have a chance to get to the yard to measure until Thursday or Friday. My setup looks like Warren's - six inches down at most, I believe - and I have never had a problem.

3M DuoPak Adhesives

3M ScotchWeld adhesives or similar 2-part epoxy-in-a-mixing-syringe may be what you want. Acrylic adhesives bond raw metal better, but the available colors are not as attractive as you might like. The urethane adhesives are not recommended for unprimed metal. Try www.mcmaster.com at pages 3291-92. I...

Mechanical Fasteners

Clay: I'm having trouble visualizing your setup, but would it be possible to use the screw holes in the Origo to attach the Kenyon frame using machine screws and little clips, sort of like an undermount sink is attached? Depending on how much clearance you have and whether you can attach the Kenyon ...

Clay: I assume you are looking for a temporary solution - Stan's got the goods on a guage solution. Two thoughts. Instead of just a flashlight, try a million-candlepower searchlight if you have one (if not, I have one I can drop into your boat if you want). If you can be persuaded to take off one fi...

Clay: We are going to re-do Remedy with Teaqua this spring, and will probably strip off the old Cetol with Aqua-strip or Ready-Strip as well. I bought a quart of Teaqua last fall and did an old tiller as a test piece. it went on easy as can be, and looks great. I never got around to putting the samp...

Nor'easter with 3-5" of snow tonight

Sorry, Neil, I think you were a week too early with the cover. OTOH, you got in a few days of great weather before this (hopefully) last snowstorm.

April 8 - Get Real!

I got a tease from my marina over the weekend - they are jammed with boats and expect a busy spring, so if I promise to be ready to launch by April 8th, I get a free mid-season short haul and power-wash. Not a bad deal, considering I always need to dive on the prop by early August. I had arranged fo...

Ty Tiller

Brad: I'm with OJ. I've made quite a few Typhoon tillers for CD owners over the years, and most of the old ones broke down near the tiller strap. There's not much left to grab and steer with, and if you are out in any kind of sea, unbolting the stub would be a chore (and if the tiller is attached to...

Cold Ones

Clay:

Good to have you back.

The biggest problem with Bristol (we can talk about the rest later) is that Andy keeps moving the yard fridge. If I can find it, I'll stock some cold ones for Those Who Keep the Boats on our joint account.

What about the Ty 53?

I saw hull #1 of the Friendship 40 at the Newport Boat Show a couple of years ago - it's a sweetie (although I didn't see it with the dodger, Stan) but basically a daysailer, and so not really very practical. The 53, on the other hand, could take you places, and draws less than 5 feet with the cente...

Jim: As you can see from Mark's photos, there is not much to the frame - it's just a couple of pieces of teak with a 3/4" slot cut in them. The hatch boards vary from boat to boat - Mark has four, my boat has three. I also have a Lexan replacement for the center hatch board, but it is 3/4"...

We have them on our CD27, and they are indeed quite useful. I had the yard install them as part of an insurance-funded repair many years ago, and they were installed without backing plates. I have since reinstalled one with a bronze backing plate made from 1" x 1/4" flat stock, and plan to...

It probably varies from boat to boat, but was most likely a bronze or stainless(or aluminum) half-oval rub rail.

Neat little device, although I wouldn't want to run it through the bender.

Let us know how well the outer gasket holds everything together; the website promises that's what keeps the inner bits from falling into the tank!
