Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg
The very popular YouTubers Sailing Uma are having a hard time with their Pearson. Just not built to withstand what they have subjected her to. I have seen similar problems when people take a lighter weight coastal boats offshore. The rigors of offshore sailing are real and unforgiving. So when peop...

Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg
the general metric he hears for a boat that can reliably outrun the weather with modern forecasting is 12 knots to windward. I assume that the word "reliably" is some kind of curve which depends on speed, direction, directional uncertainty, amount of advance notice, etc... Have you ever s...

Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg
Thanks! I'll keep learning and keep my eyes peeled for chances to go out in heavier boats. It looks like the Fenix Rising website is defunct. If anyone knows where to find some of the images and stories he'd posted there I'd love to see them! His self-steering gear sounds like a great idea, and I'm ...

Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg
You have clearly stated you want a fin keel boat. That's cool. You should get one I have this unfortunate habit of asserting things that I'm unsure of with unreasonable confidence because people react to them. That seems to be to be the best way to learn on the internet. Thank you for letting me pu...

Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg
The denominator for all this, to me, is cost. I could have gotten a Beneteau First 32 for just a little more money than my CD 25D. Neither is really offshore-ready out of the gate. Both I think would need doable upgrades. Given that tradeoff, if I didn't care about trailering my boat the Beneteau se...

Re: Recommended Book On Sail Repair?
Wish I did, sorry.I'm looking for a book that addresses the art of sail repair. Got any recommendations?
I don't like the speedy stitcher's feed mechanism, but I like that I don't need to use a thimble or leather glove with it and I can pull it out easily.

Weird this kind of image sharing has worked for me in the past. I'm using Dropbox, changing the ending to "1" from "0".

Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg
I don't understand your comment about your boat not sailing up wind. I have sailed up-wind offshore on the way to the Virgin Islands from NC three times. For 1,400 miles. This includes up wind in 35 knots and 12' seas...for days. I didn't like it. It wasn't fun but the boat did fine. Light fin keel...

Re: Ice box in 25D
Does anyone know what foam that's designed to fill a space from the bottom up is called? I'd like for the foam to drip to the bottom and then expand, so that it doesn't leave gaps. I think something like this exists, but I'm not sure what it's called.

Re: Recommended Book On Sail Repair?
I've had great luck with dacron sail repair tape, a speedy stitcher, waxed thread, and dyneema webbing. I can't think of what else I'd need for repairs at sea. Maybe a few replacement sail track slides.

Folding Nesting Dinghy
Finally biting the bullet to convert a perennially leaky Port-a-Bote into a two-part nesting dingy that can sail. I'd like to be able to store it on deck on my CD 25D. I was able to store the Port-a-Bote easily, folded-up. But putting it together on deck was too much work, so I just wouldn't go asho...

Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg
I occasionally wish I'd bought a deeper-draft fin-keeled boat, such as when I need to sail upwind and can't wait for a wind shift. Being able to trailer my boat to my house outweighs that most years. If I were to buy a non-trailerable boat, I'd go for a stout fin-keeled boat over a CD, even if I wer...
