Re: Unanswered varnishing questions
I would point out that the epoxy-varnish system involves prepping and coating the back sides of the wood as well. This prevents the migration of moisture from the back to the front, a frequent cause of surface coating failure, as well as providing a perfect surface for bedding compounds to bond. Add...

Re: Unanswered varnishing questions
This technique is widely used and well accepted. Andy Miller on Boatworks Today has a video describing this method. If done properly, there should be no reason to "strip" the epoxy from the wood. If the varnish surface starts looking bad, you can sand and renew it without removing any epox...

Re: Unanswered varnishing questions
I sand all old finish off, then do two coats of Mas LV epoxy, scuffing with a gray scotchbrite pad between coats. Then I do several coats of Pettit Captain's 2015 Varnish. The epoxy consolidates and protects the wood and gives good build. The varnish is to protect the epoxy from UV. It's an excellen...

Re: Bedding compound on an '83 Typhoon
I like the piano wire idea. Also the oscillating multi tool. I started at one end working a thin putty knife in, the moved down and put a thicker putty knife in where the thin one was, then moved further down, working a wood shim in as a wedge where the thick knife was, and so on. It took a lot of w...

Re: Bedding compound on an '83 Typhoon
Dolfinite was commonly used back then. I’m sure someone will chime in with a definitive answer. My cockpit coamings and most other trim were bedded with something much less tenacious and light gray in color. I have heard it said that Dolphinite is good for bedding wood because it leaves it removabl...

Bedding compound on an '83 Typhoon
I have encountered several pieces of teak trim on my Typhoon that were bedded with a very tenacious compound that is pinkish in color and somewhat rubbery. The teak across the aft of the poop deck was completely stuck down with this bubble gum looking stuff, as is the teak oval on the cockpit floor ...

Re: Wanted: Genoa cars and blocks for Typhoon 3/4" tracks
I know where to get new ones for about $120 each, but was hoping to find some used ones for less.

Re: What caused this unusual gel coat cracking on a Typhoon
So the verdict is in on the cause of this type of cracking. It is due to a lack of resin in the chopped strand mat just beneath the gelcoat. When they laid up the boat, first they spray the gelcoat into the mold, then start laying in the mat and woven roving, wetting it out with resin as they go. In...

Re: What caused this unusual gel coat cracking on a Typhoon
Nice boat! Where on your boat do you have the cracks? On mine they are on the decks rom about a foot aft of the chainplates to the aft end of the cabin on both port and starboard sides. Some are on the sides of the cabin itself. They don't occur elsewhere on the boat. Just wondering if yours are in ...

Yeah, that is the identical type of cracking. Was your boat under a tarp for extended periods?

Re: What caused this unusual gel coat cracking on a Typhoon
20191025_112429.jpg The sort of cracking in your photo is pretty typical stress cracking that occurs in high stress areas like corners and usually run parallel to the corners. My 87 Catalina 22 has those on the cockpit too. The thing about the ones on my Typhoon is they are randomly oriented to one...

What caused this unusual gel coat cracking on a Typhoon
I am beginning restoration on a 1983 Typhoon Weekender. It has a peculiar cracking pattern in the decks aft from the chain plates and in a couple other spots. I have seen typical stress cracks, but these aren't the same. Does anybody know with certainty what causes them? As far as I can tell, the co...
