Re: 25D seacock grease
Back in the water and after adjustment the starboard scupper was the only one weeping just a tad. That was Mon. Today no sign of weeping and operating all resulted in not a drop. I also painted all the backer boards. I had a unknown weeping of the head intake over a pretty good period time. Result w...

Re: 25D seacock grease
I find it takes very little grease to get them right. I use a popsicle stick to spread a thin film, maybe 1/32in thick, on the barrel, mostly toward the middle. The extra will simply squeeze out both ends when you tighten the nut. Over time you will learn how little you can get away with. If you us...

Re: 25D seacock grease
Randy: Any advise you can share with a fellow CD 25D caretaker on the best (least injurious) way to remove the engine compartment seacocks :?: The more detail the better; the simpler the better. Removing the hoses, reaching and connecting with nuts, bolts, etc. Sadly, I have been stuck on the starb...

Re: 25D seacock grease
Thanks, but I have read this info. What I need is a feel for the 'correct' amount of grease.mgphl52 wrote:Check out this site:

25D seacock grease
Greetings: I just cleaned and re-greased all seacocks. Seraph is still out of the water getting her bottom finished. My question involves the amount of grease required. After greasing the head intake and taking it back apart there seems to be very little grease visible. I brushed grease only on the ...

Re: Improving Bow Sprit/Anchor Rollers on Cape Dory 31
Can't address the bow sprite issue, but for the rode jumping off and securing an anchor, how about simply adding a strap across the top? I did this to our 25D.

Re: Good book for winter reading
"Cruise of the Snark" by Jack London.
I really enjoyed reading his personal account of sailing the South Seas back when sailors had to be tough, 1911.
He was one determined sailor and a most gifted writer.

Re: How to heave to
I heave to when single handing in order to drop my main. Much easier, especially when it's blowing a ton. Safer too. Randy: Could you walk me through this :?: If I am hove to on S/V Bali Ha'i on a starboard tack and then go forward on the starboard side (sort of the high side) to drop the main, onc...

Re: Permanently raising the boom on a CD25D--good/bad?
I raised the clew only with good results. You can experiment while sailing by using the first reef to pull the clew up until it's at the height you need. Be aware that the clew will lower when the reef is put in, unless you raise the reef points(I didn't). Under reef the clew is raised higher than t...

Re: How to heave to
Would it be possible to take down your jib after heaving to. I single hand a lot and would like to find a way to go forward while alone. Absolutely. BUT, remember as the headsail goes away so does the force holding the bow down. With the main sheeted tight on center and the helm down you might star...

Re: Leads when Reefing the Genoa
By the time I need to get down to 100% or less it's blowing rather hard, so trying to beat as close to the wind as possible isn't an desirable option. Neither is moving the sheets in those conditions. It's tricky when you're alone. Heaving to puts the lazy sheet to leeward. Best to check the thread...

Re: Leads when Reefing the Genoa
On our 25D, with a 130, when reefing I simply move the block forward on the toe rail track. By the time I need to get down to 100% or less it's blowing rather hard, so trying to beat as close to the wind as possible isn't an desirable option. Neither is moving the sheets in those conditions. I remo...
