Re: Replace 2 GM Yanmar fuel transfer pump?
Good advice. They're definitely prime suspects. My thinking is that I'd hate to get the line pulled apart and put back together with new washers and cleaned fittings, re-bled and all, only to discover the leak is in the diaphragm itself, or the gasket at the block. If I'm committing that much time a...

Replace 2 GM Yanmar fuel transfer pump?
Towards the end of last season, after a few cumulative hours of running the engine, I began to get a sheen of diesel covering the oil pan beneath the 1982 13 HP Yanmar in my CD 27, and I could not for the life of me determine its origin. As I commissioned the boat this spring, I ran the engine vigor...

Re: Perry nut zinc alternative?
I use this zinc on my prop shaft above the propeller. Just fits and gives me a full 7 month New England season. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/sea-shie ... cordNum=11

Re: Wet Plywood backing board on my Through the hull
Having just replaced the backing board of my port side scupper (following the excellent advice on these boards), I too was alarmed at the condition of the decades old marine plywood. I will be replacing the remaining ones next haul. On that note, I discovered quite by accident that the small end of ...

Re: Emergency tiller CD 270
Welcome! When I commissioned my CD 27 about this time last year, it too lacked an emergency tiller. I removed the plate over the tiller post, took measurements (I believe mine is a 7/8 inch square post), did a mock up with some pieces of wood to get the right angles (I too have a wheel and needed to...

Re: Engine pan full of polypropelene glycol
file:///C:/Users/poulins/Downloads/CD%20below%20engine.jpg I tried attaching this photo earlier. The "pan" is simply that fiberglass "V" shaped wedge extending from below the motor mounts to the stern. I also discovered a good amount of the glycol in the bilge. Indeed, I meant th...

Re: Engine pan full of polypropelene glycol
Fred--it's the direct cooled--no heat exchanger. I was wondering about the durability of gasket at the bottom of the exhaust/water reservoir. Do those typically fail? Running it with the pail sounds like the next step for sure.

Re: Engine pan full of polypropelene glycol
Thanks all. Checked the hoses visually and manually--found nothing, though I'm hoping after re-seating the intake post-winterizing perhaps I didn't tighten the airplane clamp enough. Not sure where the freeze plug is? And can I run the engine sitting on the hard, drinking from a pan of glycol? Thoug...

Engine pan full of polypropelene glycol
So--the good news--the port scupper backing plate replacement project goes swimmingly. New G10 plate epoxied in today--used a sawzall with a metals blade and then a belt sander to get the desired cylindrical effect. Used a box wrench to remove the thru-hull, much to my delight. Then I happened to gl...

Re: Waste/Water Tanks Recommendations
Thanks, Pete. Ronco had better prices, but the cost to ship the tanks from the west to east coasts added nearly $100 per tank. This is the range of the RI outfit, and with them I can bring the old tanks over and get the fittings cut exactly.

Peter Hunt, a marine surveyor who actually performed my survey last year, worked for CD back in the day. My guess is he'd enjoy talking with you.

Waste/Water Tanks Recommendations
I'm looking to replace both tanks in my CD 27--the 15 gallon triangular waste tank underneath the port settee and the 12 gallon multi-angled water tank in the bow (I discovered after purchase that it had been winterized with ethylene glycol--yep, hoses and sink pump need replacing, too). The boat's ...

Re: CD 25 vs. CD 27
Hi Chris, I just finished my first season with a CD 27 on Narragansett Bay and I used that boat as a day-sailor and a weekender and my wife and I spent a comfortable four days aboard when my son was away at camp. I've got the Yanmar 13 horse diesel (the factory upgrade over the 8) and a wheel and ne...

Re: Scupper through-hull seepage repair?
Is the purpose of the step wrench, improvised or otherwise, simply to support the thru-hull as the seacock is unscrewed? To remove torque from the thru-bolts and keep those holes from cracking?

Re: Scupper through-hull seepage repair?
Great advice, thanks everybody. Jamestown has pre-cut 1/4 inch G-10 backing plates. Are these too thin to replace the existing plywood backing plate? Too weak? I don't have a drill press and it sounds like working with the 1/2 inch G-10 will be my biggest challenge. Also, I have some 3M 5200 from a ...
