Re: 95% jib on a CD28
... So basically I have to use the 115% and and cant use anything smaller unless I use the club footed boom? In my experience the club-footed jib with 2 or more reefs in the main is a very handy and capable setup for this design, but I don't know if that's exactly what you are asking. 'I have used ...

Re: dinghy rubrail repair question
... I hear teak is hard to bend, I don't really have a way to steam it, would soaking it help? I tested by pushing it against the fiberglass and confirming it gently by hand to the curve, it will bend that much but takes a bit of hand pressure ... After a while some old salt showed me how to steam ...

Re: 95% jib on a CD28
... Someone gave me a hank on sail thats the same size as the original club jib and I was going to give it a try. Was not sure to run sheets for the small sail outside or inside the shrouds. I had the same boat with hank-on sails for quite a while, and on occasion used the club jib with sheets. The...

Re: 95% jib on a CD28
I have ... another sail that looks like a 95%. Its pretty small. Should I run the jibsheets inside the shrouds or outside the shrouds like the 115%? First, do you have a furling system, or do you use hank-on sails? The sail you describe may have been the original club-footed jib that shipped with t...

Re: dinghy rubrail repair question
Couple days ago I ... went to retrieve my dinghy at the town float [and] The fore starboard side rub rail had been absolutely pulverized to smithereens ... Anybody tackle a project like this before? ... Yes, and more than once on my Dyer boats and my CD10s (plural). I don't mind admitting that I ha...

Re: What's the deal with my waterline?
... The boat has always squatted at the stern when at rest, and removing all that weight has helped some, but not completely ... There is still more bottom paint showing forward than aft. It seems to me that the boot stripe/bottom paint junction line curves up towards the bow ... In my experience, ...

Re: Sta-lok fittings--is threadlock essential?
Just made up some new standing rigging with Sta-lok threaded fittings ... The Sta-lok instructions didn't say anything about threadlocker ... The Sta-lok instructions specifically said they don't need to be super tight ... As long as you follow the Sta-Lok guidelines closely and do not deviate, you...

Re: Laptop for chart plotting?
Not sure what you decided, but just about any old laptop fitted with OpenCPN and the available free charts is likely to fit the bill. There are many cheap GPS fobs that work with this setup.Dave Berquist wrote:Thanks to all - very educational process, this!

Re: Depth sounder woes
Update: I checked the existing depth sounder and it is the very same model ... I think I can handle it ... if it doesn't work then, it will be a transponder problem. Probably not worth a haul right now depending on your sailing plans. These days most charting apps (or whatever your choice) will get...

Re: Replace main halyard cd 28
On a CD28 with external halyards Not all CD28s have external halyards! I'm guessing internal halyards came in later years or were an option since my 1982 CD28 has them. I am not saying some owners did not later modify the original spar with internal halyards. Far from it. But the company NEVER ship...

Re: Replace main halyard cd 28
want to replace main halyard for the main sail of a cape dory 28. Would appreciate if anyone knows length, size and type of line they are using ? Thanks How difficult is it to just messenger the existing line and duplicate it? Either way leave sufficient extra cordage to allow reversing, re-splicin...

Re: Trailering a CD 28
... couldn't help notice your port side aft portlight does not look original ... did Cape Dory change their portlight options over time? ... Short answer: yes. The original CD 28 boats had plastic ports with three (3) similar oval designs forward and a larger rectangular job aft. Over time a few ow...

Re: What size (as a percent of foretriangle) is your working
I ordered a 100% hank-on jib but the sailmaker sent me a 110% ... I still think I want a 100% or even a 90% non-overlapping jib ... With the 110, above 20 knots, even with a double reefed main, the boat feels overpowered ... I'm also thinking of adding a reef point to the jib with a 2nd clew but no...

Re: a dirty bilge...
so on a scale of 1 to 10...how dirty...? 3.7 ... thoughts on best way to clean ... Not sure about "best" but for "easiest" try this: (1) launch boat, (2) dump a (large) hit of Dawn in there, (3) filler up with a hose, (4) go sailing (quite a bit), and then (5) pump the bilge. An...
