Re: Chain vs rope scope question
... With the Danforth you have a pretty good mud anchor (though you will have to watch for wind/current shifts) ... Not to get too far off Neil's subject (I think we have enough time Covidly speaking), I've often thought the Danforth or "Ogg" anchor really gets a worse rep these days than...

Re: Chain vs rope scope question
... it sets easily, holds when I back down hard, and resets when the wind/current changes. It also trips easily once the chain is straight up and down. Is there anything else it's supposed to do? ... If I knew the answer I guess I'd be a famous sailing author (which I'm not). I guess I always go wi...

... I try to talk to those around me. I want to know what kind of anchor they are on and more importantly, how much scope they have out ... lets me know if they [know] what they are doing ... Steve, chatting folks up never hurts. This is not to mention that it often results in free scotch (not nece...

... 22 lb. Lewmar Claw on the roller. Typical bottom is mud or sand. Typical situation is I'm surrounded by boats with all chain... I figure if I double my chain to 60', I'd be closer to all chain than I am now... and might be able to swing in a smaller circle ... First of all, hats off to Jim's co...

Re: Chain vs rope scope question
Currently I anchor with 30' of 3/8" chain and 1/2" rope thereafter. I'm not likely to go all chain, but I am thinking of adding an additional 30'. I typically anchor in 20' of (high tide) water. How much less scope might I put out if I double the chain length? For me. this is a "how ...

... Our grandfathers made successful landfall following an ocean crossing. That's impressive, no? That's impressive, yes! And we're here today still talking about it. Hope you and the family are doing well, and that you still recall the sailing lessons you gave me in the Boston Harbor Islands (ten ...

Neil, I wish I'd had this advice earlier. The only port both my grandfathers ever visited was Ellis Island.Neil Gordon wrote: ... The Channel is easy enough in light wind, at slack tide and with good visibility. Otherwise ... don't use it as a shortcut unless you learned how to do so from your grandfather.

Re: CD 25 Off Shore Capabilities
I have watched a lot of boats go through Cannapitsit Channel. I have rowed through with my dinghy and snorkeled it as well. The cruising guide always made it sound pretty dicey but it never looked too bad. I might give it a try the next time I am out there in settled weather, Steve . Steve, there a...

... I encountered Serrafyn ... near Sausalito ... and managed to hail a ride on San Francisco Bay. I came away wondering why any normal person would even consider sailing around the world in such a vessel. Why do you say that? I was speaking only for myself based on my own needs and my own sailing ...

Re: Larry Pardey Has Died

The books encouraged many young sailors including me to embrace the idea of sailing as adventure. It happens that I encountered Serrafyn by accident near Sa...

Re: What's the deal with my waterline?
... Maybe as a temporary fix I should try adding a lead pig (or, as someone suggested, a dead battery) up forward , and repair the waterline and boot stripe later ... I'd guess that adding useless dead weight in the ends is not going to improve performance. Are you primarily concerned with appearan...
