Re: Typhoon spreader bases bent
The spreader base on one of the shrouds on my Typhoon is bent downward rather than back like yours are. You can see it in this photo: DSC_0481a.JPG It's one of those things that has been niggling at me but that I haven't fixed. I'm afraid if I try to bend the stainless base back into the correct pos...

Re: The Voyages of H.W Tilman
Hey John, This is in reference to the wooden boat aspect of this thread rather than the Tilman books. I think you are right that nowadays true wooden construction (as opposed to composite wood/fiberglass, for example) is only for either the very rich or for those rare people with the time, motivatio...

Re: Video: Installing an Engine and Folding Prop
Hi John! I've been watching your YouTube videos as you post them. I especially like the way you re-cap the big projects you've done, and this was a good overview of your engine installation. Thanks for this video (and all of your videos, for that matter). Keep up the good work! I don't post comments...

Re: Tips for snaking cockpit drains on a typhoon?
I've never needed anything other than blowing out with water from a hose nozzle, but if that doesn't work for you, try something like a Zip-It Drain Tool. It is flexible plastic with little teeth that are good at grabbing hair. It might work with sticks, leaves and other detritus that made its way d...

Re: Ty Sr specs vs CD22 etc.
I’m the proud owner of 1986 Typhoon Sr. (#33?)”Sonnet”, and have a couple of questions… Although I received an original brochure for the Ty Sr from “Fairport Sail, Inc.” of Grand River, OH(!?!), there is No mention whatsoever in the ‘86 CD Owners Manual..? So my 1st question is Why is that..? I und...

Re: Cockpit Coaming Rebuild
I do wonder sometimes if anyone reads this stuff. Be assured that your posts are read, John. I've been off the board for quite a while and am trying to catch up on what I missed. Even though I haven't had a chance to read your posts as you posted them, I will get to them eventually. Plus the...

Re: Typhoon Sail (Class) Number
You are correct that in some classes of sailboats there is a class association that assigns sail numbers, and the sail numbers in those classes have no relationship to the hull number. That's how it is in the Sunfish class, for example. But to my knowledge, there is no class association for Typhoons...

Re: I Spy...
Hi All, I've been off the board for the last 6 months, but yesterday I saw the Cape Dory 33 Julie Rose out sailing on Pensacola Bay and thought it would be a good time to get back on and post this "I Spy". My apologies that these photos are not the best, but Julie Rose passed at quite a di...

Re: Far Reach Voyages YouTube--New Videos
Thanks for taking the time Jim. I watched one of their videos. Wow. Professional documentary level stuff. That's way beyond my skill or time I would want to devote to something like that. I am focused on keep it simple sailing. Less production. No music. Less talking. I guess I described it poorly....

Re: Far Reach Voyages YouTube--New Videos
... I spent some time trying to figure out how to do what is probably a simple animated Google Earth route so many people use but it made my head hurt and I went with a manageable simple crayon method. Still a Neanderthal when it comes to technology. Should have it figured out by the time I get 190...

Re: Far Reach Voyages YouTube--New Videos
Hi John, I enjoyed the videos! Well done! I liked seeing Far Reach in motion and getting to see her from all the different camera angles. The videos gave me a much better appreciation for the boat and for what sailing aboard her is like. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and likew...

How to keep varnish from peeling at edge of toe rail?
Areas of varnish on the toe rail of my Typhoon are peeling up around the bottom edge of the toe rail where it meets the deck. I assume that Cape Dory put some kind of bedding compound in there but it is long since gone, and water gets up under the edge of the varnish and causes it to lift and discol...

... For Jim, attached below is photo of a couple sanding blocks I cut on the chop saw. I used adhesive backed sand paper made for long boards. Rip the blue board 2 3/4" wide what ever length you need then chop to desired length. You can bevel cut them to get into a tight spot. Easily customiza...

Hey John, I just read the Practical Sailor article. Well done! I have been through your web site but didn't truly appreciate the scope of the project until I read the article. I look forward to seeing the rest of the installments of the series.
Smooth sailing,
Jim

Re: Still Sailing in Connecticut 2022 and low tech heating
I've used an inverted clay flowerpot in the stove with good results for a cheap and dirty solution. I prefer the Little Buddy by Mr. Heater if you don't mind spending more for a purpose-built product. If you use Little Buddy, you will want to use it in the sink or someplace similar that will help it...
