Re: battery monitor, one bank, no starting battery
Hey Maine, haven't seen the Balmar yet. Can it show amperage like the victron and others? That's a great trouble shooting function, in addition to having decent battery monitoring functions too. I don't understand how they accomplish that with the Balmar without a shunt, but I'll check it out some t...

Re: Two Kids and A Yorkie: A sailing adventure to Block Isla
Adam, disregard PM, you are who I thought you were :D Sorry we did not get a chance to meet while you were on Broad Creek! I can relate to wishing time would stand still. Your daughters are precious, and I have such great memories of trips with my children when they were little. The trips are even m...

>> 3 women in bikinis << Required by the captain in order to keep the overall weight down, no doubt. I'm implementing this measure of economy on board immediately I think ladies just have an innate tendency towards thrift, as demonstrated by some of the hard working gals on my farm. These are defin...

Re: Solar charge controller
Thx Maine. I've got everything to change the cabling including the terminal fuses for the battery. The way I've been running it is essentially as if charge was only to house bank, since I never change the switch - just use it as an on/off. Will be good to get it configured properly, and I can't real...

Re: Solar charge controller
Same here with the Genasun and Echo Charge. The system works nicely. Maine Sail, I have not had a chance to re-wire my alternator directly to house bank, but when operating the boat, I am always switched to the house bank, with the echo charge connected to the backup start battery. The Echo Charge s...

Re: First "sail" of the season...
Great post, Bob. On one of my cruises down the coast I made friends with a semi-prominent circumnavigator, with some significant passagemaking experience over the years. He was hilarious when it came to docking - gave me hope! It also makes me anxious, especially when I'm singlehanding, which is a l...

Great idea Fred with the copper. I'd really like to do my bottom one day without hauling out.
Enjoy your spring/summer travels-

Re: Bermuda
Steve, congratulations on your passage to Bermuda. Sounds like a good test of man and boat. Can't believe you landed a billfish...that's hardcore! I've always wondered what we'd do if we hooked one but haven't yet.
Great story - thanks for posting.

cooling water
You're on the right track checking cooling water at the mixing elbow. These should be replaced periodically, which I did not know until I bought my new boat and saw records for three of them over the years. At the same time I bought Cheoah , my 2GM20 on Anne Freeman (what a gal!) quit putting out wa...

Mine used to cut of all the time unexpectedly, and often would not re-aquire satellites. It takes more effort and is a little harder to relax but glad I can do without if I need to.

great ideas
Rich, good call on the thread protection. I also do that with many fasteners I have problems with. They pay me the same whether it is difficult or not- Jim, the zinc is a great idea, in addition to checking bolts routinely. There is a zinc just as you suggested on my new boat. Not understanding how ...

cetol
Hi OJ,
A friend of mine just did his front door with cetol and it looks terrific.
Paint sounds like a great idea and requires the least effort for maintenance in the coming years.

MPPT
Mainesail, thanks as always for some great info. I recently bought a Kyocera 135 with a regular junction box, but have yet to buy a controller. The guy that sold me my panel told me the MPPT technology was really for larger arrays and would be a waste of $$. I delayed the purchases waiting to learn ...
