Orion is a beautiful boat.
It's nice to read posts about reefing before it's a high drama situation; so different from the racing fleet/ownership mentality.

Re: New sails for CD 25
Thanks Rick. A local friend had sails made recently and knows the local rep (measurements, follow up etc.) - from one of the bigger name sailmakers. I will follow up with him. I figured CDs you could pretty much just catalog order. I'm somewhat anti salesman/sales process and a sucker for convenienc...

Re: Testing the holding tank.
Thanks Rick. Sounds pretty straightforward. I was thinking to add some food coloring to the water so any leaks would be more obvious. It will be nice to know that I can overnight on her.
Thanks again.
Happy sailing.

Testing the holding tank.
I have a CD25 with an inboard head. I haven't used the head as I don't know that the lines and holding tank are sound. Any suggestions on how to test the system before I create an unpleasant mess?
Thank you.

New sails for CD 25
Hi all,
Although my sails are still in serviceable condition I'm looking at ordering a new set of sails, or at least a mainsail to start. Headsail is roller furling. Any recommendations? Not looking to sew my own (yet). In the Northeast US.
Thanks for any guidance.

Re: Sailing Solo
As Warren mentions: Furlex for the genny, tiller pilot to help steer the boat and lazy jacks to control the main when hoisting or lowering. This will improve your overall comfort and ease of use sooooo much. Dropping and hoisting the main is a snap and reducing headsail as the wind picks up is an ea...

Re: Painting over my Teak
There was a member hereon who prepped their Cape Dory 25 Minimus for offshore sailing and painted some of the teak white and it looks pretty nice. Here is a link to the project page for that boat - http://www.omick.net/adventure/sailing/ ... _hull.html

Re: Tips on Solo Sailing
On the safety side, I would add: get a comfortable life jacket. If you fall off of the boat when single handing, no one is there to turn around and pick you up.

Glad to hear this. I've looked into these but wasn't sure if they would work on the CD winches.

Re: Painting over my Teak
As John stated, the best way to remove the varnish is with a heat gun and a pull scraper (with a regular scraper you can badly gouge the wood). It sounds to me like the previous owner may have simply sanded the wood and applied varnish, rather than cleaned the wood properly. The heat gun/TE-KA route...

Re: CD 25 vs 25D
I have a 1978 25 with a marine head and holding tank below the V-berth. Also has a sink and water tank aft. Originally the boat came with a two burner countertop stove, I believe. It's a nice simple layout. The starboard berth is about 6'4 while the port berth is probably a foot shorter due to the s...

Re: Painting over my Teak
Have you tried TE-KA Teak Cleaner? It should pull all the dirt and gray right out with little effort (just a brush and water). Then you can just leave the deep grooves and treat the wood with varnish, or whatever your preference. It really does an amazing job whenever I've used it.
