Of scrapers, sanders, and sore muscles

Not too long ago there was some discussion about bottom work and paint scrapers. Cathy suggested that many people in her yard swear by the scraper. Well, here's another. After previously spending four dusty, miserable hours wrestling with a 6" random-orbit overhead, today I decided to give the ...

Deck thickness

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but I was at the boat today and decided to snap a picture of Ariel's hawse pipe. My estimate of an inch and a half was a bit generous. The actual measurement is one inch. Here's the picture just for fun. Click to enlarge. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/ariel-cd3...

Hi David, Very nice job with the pictures. I noticed you have a deep reef set up in the main with a line running forward. It looks like it runs through the boom bails then to a block at the goose neck. From there it heads for the mast base and is a mystery beyond that. Where is this line made fast ...

And all of this was indicated in your survey, right?

Fred,

Just curious to know how much of this you anticipated when you bought the boat. Is all of this coming as a surprise or were you aware of the issues?

Good luck! I enjoy following your progress.

Re: deck thickness

Woody and Ken: I looked in my windlass installation project records and found that the deck is 1/4 inch thick at the hawse pipes and the bow sprit is 2 inches thick. John Danicic CD 36 - Mariah - #124 Lake Superior On Ariel, a '79 CD36, the deck is approximately 1" - 1 1/2" thick at the h...

Oswego John

OJ,

It was an honest mistake. There are so many variations on VanDenburgh that you're not the first to get it confused. Thanks for the 15 minutes of fame.

Cheers,

Nicely done

Rich,

Looks great! Thanks for taking the time to document and photograph the procedure in such detail; I'm sure it will prove useful to many. Now if we could just scrape together enough money to do the same on Ariel!

Cheers,

Regarding mounting PVC pipe

Russell (et al), I vaguely recall a discussion about using slugs in the mast's internal track to prevent wires from banging about. The theory was that the wires are bundled together, supported every 12 inches or so with zip-ties fastened to a slug, then hauled up the mast. We haven't done this on Ar...

Hatch

Russell, I think my vote would be for a way of retaining the hatch when it's open rather than removing it altogether. In any significant weather, you're going to be forced to work with one hand while hanging on with the other - something the current arrangement allows you to do. Beyond that, you're ...

Cetol

Richard,

In our experience, touch-ups look fine as long as you don't rough up the area first. If you rough up only a small section, you will end up with two distinct shades - the "patchy" look you mentioned.

Re: K.I.S.S. principle

A few times during single handing off shore in rough going I have put a second line from the boom gallows to the mast... Greg, You don't by any chance have a picture of your boom gallows that you could share with us? If not, could you tell me about the location, construction, etc? Thanks, David, Jr.
