Re: Wheel steering pedestal removal and replacement project

Another prime example of a CD production shortcut: exposed balsa core around a cutout. Did you see evidence of water intrusion in the area or around the boltholes? What you see is some type of filler covering 3/4" ply. I don't know if that's unique as I've not crawled around under any other CD...

Re: Stability curves for 25D

Perhaps I should approach this question from a different angle. If the CD 25D was sold in Europe it would have to have a CE classification A, B, C or D. Does anyone know what class this boat might fall under, A or B? Alternatively there is a STIX number which is calculated on a number of factors. D...

Re: Bobstay upper T and Turnbuckle for CD30c

Greetings, I need to replace the whole upper turnbuckle fitting on the bob stay. It appears like the existing turnbuckle is bronze. Didn't see these on Spartans web page. Has anyone changed the open turnbuckle to a closed body ? Anyone have a great source for them in bronze ( suspect the rest of th...

Re: Cape Dory 36 help

You might try searching owners' websites, too. John Stone, of The Far Reach, documented his refit - and now his sailing adventures. I have my own website and blog that might have some relevant information. Searching the archives here might provide some good information. I suspect you'll hear from mo...

Re: Engine winterizing question

I, too, am of the opinion that you should only start it if you're prepared to bring it up to temperature, run it for a bit, and then winterize it again. If you're not interested in doing that, I'd be inclined to rotate it slowly by hand - if possible - or leave it alone till next season.

Re: Mid ship cleats

Our Spartan midship cleats are one of the best improvements we've made to Ariel. Not only are they functional, but they're attractive. I'd install them all over again. The only other similar addition I'd recommend are track-mounted cleats farther aft. One can never have too many secure points for at...

Cool. Didn't know some of them came with a daggerboard. I thought they all had a centerboard in a trunk.

The mast partner area is solid fiberglass. No core. At least on the Far Reach.
That's good to hear. I hope hull #7 is the same. ;) How did you determine that it's solid glass?

Re: Seal your deck hardware

Where did you find the exposed core on your boat? Tom, I found exposed core around the emergency tiller access plate and - eventually - around the hawse pipe after the thin layer of resin CD "sealed" the core with disintegrated. I'm pulling the mast this winter to ensure that the once-sea...

Seal your deck hardware

Just a friendly reminder to inspect and rebed your deck hardware...before it becomes an issue. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2hMCkeBmo8k/V_Ll3matcoI/AAAAAAAAFNA/m9AxXFGzOu8yjwoIqfiQ7tsy3SAWQHK1gCLcB/s1600/IMG_3323.JPG This isn't our Cape Dory - fortunately. ... Apart from probably having a longer turning radius in the marina... Not exactly. Back and fill. The boat will turn around in her own length with a little prop walk and blasts of forward with the rudder hard over. A full keel means more wetted surface so potentially more drag than a fin-keeled b...

Re: 1980 cd 36 waste water holding tank

I ordered a holding tank from Ronco Plastics several years ago. They have hundreds of different tank styles, shapes, and sizes. You might check them out. Out of curiosity, what do you mean by a "below the head holding tank"? If you mean that the tank is located lower than the head, that se...
