Re: Not mine, but the one just before mine. Hull No. 5 !!

Interesting! I'm not a Cape Dory historian, but that nameplate does appear legit. I'm not sure about the bowsprit. In the photo, it looks like the forestay still attaches to the bow in the normal location (compared to a Typhoon without a bowsprit) so it appears to be either decorative or for some an...

Re: Preparing for the Worst: Man Overboard

Good discussion! I have one additional factor to add that I don't think has been brought up yet--your surroundings. "Stay on the boat" is excellent advice, and in a bluewater situation, it's likely to be life-saving. However, that's not where all sailing happens. I sail on relatively shelt...

Re: Does the teak cover on top of the rudderpost do anything

Thanks for starting this discussion, Jim! Full disclosure: That's my Ty in Jim's example photo. It lost its rudder tube trim ring at some point prior to my ownership. Based on that and the stainless steel tiller, I'm guessing one of the previous owners had a dislike of varnish. Personally, while I d...

Re: Typhoon solar setup for trolling motor

FINALLY made it out to the Typhoon for a sail, which means I also was able to grab the charging history off of it. (Side note: The Bluetooth app makes it very easy to export this data, which I love.) A little fiddling in Numbers and here's what we get. Screen Shot 2020-08-15 at 9.13.45 AM.png For co...

Re: Typhoon solar setup for trolling motor

Thanks for summing up the ground rules, John! I am also not an expert, but from what I've read you're right on about lead-acid capacity and recharging and panel capacity. Fortunately, I'm not using 50 Ah a day. My trolling motor can theoretically pull 50A at full throttle, but I only run it for mayb...

Re: New America's Cup Boats

Defender was built out of an electrifying combination of steel, aluminum, and bronze. It was launched in 1895, won the cup, and was broken up in 1901. Even back in the day these were purpose-built race boats that weren't expected to have a long lifespan after they'd done their job. Also, the men sa...

Re: Informal Usage "Poll" - Covid Related

I've been sailing less than normal, but that's only partially COVID-related--we had a new baby in May that's been sucking up a lot of my boat time. It did affect the Wednesday night beer-can racing here, though. Our season started late due to the stay-at-home order and there are definitely fe...

Re: Typhoon solar setup for trolling motor

I wouldn't say I have the setup finalized, but it's all assembled and working. I "installed" the charge controller in the starboard quarter berth with some self-adhesive velcro (the heavy-duty kind). The battery box lives under the cockpit sole. Some 8 AWG leads run aft under the sole and ...

Re: Overnight on a Typhoon?

What do you all tie your Typhoon boom tents to? Without lifelines and stanchions, there's a shortage of handy things to tie to. The battens also seem like a pretty good idea.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Sounds like the mast gate is indeed an effective solution.

Typhoon reefing - mast gate?

I'm curious to hear how other Typhoon owners deal with lowering their main to reef. (Or non-Typhoon owners too, for that matter.) Right now the sail track on my mast looks like this: [masthead] [..etc...] [slide] [slide] [sail track stop] [feed slot] [boom gooseneck] There are a couple of problems w...

My 2 cents: I've never done it, but my understanding is that laminate isn't that hard to work with. If you can build the table tops, you can put the laminate on too.

Re: Interesting Boats

In lieu of a photo, I've got some video. This is from four summers ago. I'm beating upwind in some good-size (for a Typhoon) waves. The schooner Manitou (a 114 foot steel schooner that does day-sail charters in Grand Traverse Bay) makes a picturesque appearance at the end. https://www.youtube.com/wa...

Indeed, nicely restored and a very nice price for that package!

I'm curious, where does the battery live? In one of the cabin compartments?
