Re: Dolphinite Bedding Compund

John is absolutely right about dolphinite. It is particularly good for bedding broad surfaces, i.e. the canvas covering the plywood foredeck of my 12 1/2. For smaller jobs, like re-bedding deck hardware, butyl tape works well, but I believe is more expensive.

Re: Drones, anyone use one?

There are a lot of great drones on the market, but to use them as an extension of your photo arm you require certain features. These would include GPS guidance, reasonable camera specs, reasonable battery life, durability, good obstacle avoidance system, among other things. I use a DJI Mavic. It cos...

Re: What is this ?

John, that's a great book and sitting on my bookshelf as we speak. It does speak a bit more to larger boats than mine, but some of the principles apply. I think what I really need to do is get her in the water and sail! Hoping to find a 12 1/2 sailor nearby to help mentor me. Not as commonplace up h...

Re: What is this ?

Folks on the Herreshoff Registry forum also confirm that it is a jib club, called a camber club, that was used on those later model Bullseye that did not utilize a club foot. Not sure how it ended up with me, but am glad to have it. It's a pretty piece. You can see from my photo that my EvenFall is ...

Well, I couldn't help myself. Here's a picture of EvenFall from a couple of summers ago.

Re: What is this ?

I think you are correct and I am wrong, as I can see the slotted end fitting into the forestay and the other end fitting into the an eye on the leech or clew. Very interesting,. I also have a straight jib club foot, similar to that on my CD31. Never occurred to me that a club could be fitted somewhe...

Re: What is this ?

it’s definitely not the jib club, as i’ve got another spar that clearly is and I can’t think of why a jib club should be curved as this piece is. Still a mystery.
Thanks for the compliments. I thought of posting some pictures but may wait until she is afloat.

What is this ?

I recently was lucky to come into possession of a 1930 Herreshoff 12 1/2. She is gaff rigged with club footed jib and I am excited to have her. Among the spars and accessory pieces was this curved piece that I can't figure out. It is asymmetrical in its curvature and somewhat tapered at one end. The...

Re: Cost Per Sail

I think when considering the cost of sailing, one has to imagine what you would be spending otherwise. For example, I go on at least a 2 week cruise every summer. If I were to substitute a travel vacation by other means,( i.e. airplane tickets, car rental, hotels, etc), my guess is it would be a pre...

Re: Reefing

I think we're overlooking the important part of this story.

This!

My wife's maiden voyage on my 25D was a white-knuckler from Boothbay to Harpswell, into 20kt winds and 4-6 feet seas. Been single-handed ever since!

Re: Frozen foot block

this cheek plate has a recess that the bushing goes in. Can someone tell me if that is just wear or is that part of the design I realized the two mounting holes in the cheeks were 1/4" while the old cheeks had 5/16" holes Jim, I did neglect to mention I had to also drill out the center ho...

Re: Frozen foot block

Jim, I was told by Joy, the customer service angel, that it was the only stainless steel bushing they have. In any case, here are the specs she used to describe the part: in inches: 0.316 ID 0.907 Long 0.50 OD The specs are exactly right for the block and you can readily see that it would almost sur...

Re: Frozen foot block

Joy R., at Schaefer, miraculously came up with the exact stainless bushing I need and replacement cheek plates, as well. Great customer support! $12 for the bushing and $17 for the plate. And I get to keep my irreplaceable bronze sheave! The perfect solution. Thanks, Schaefer Marine! Interestingly, ...
