Re: CD 28 Stuffing Box
You have a Buck Algonquin stuffing box. Here are the wrenches http://catalog.buckalgonquin.com/viewit ... x-wrenches

Re: CD 28 Stuffing Box
PS: you must also have two wrenches. Use both at the same time. Position the handles so that you squeeze the two w/o applying torque to the tube. But, it looks pretty jazzed up. Unfortunate, Cape Dory really mucked up this area. Cutting it out and rebuilding may be the long term solution. http://www...

Re: CD 28 Stuffing Box
PB blaster is not going to work on bronze. If you can find away to soak it in vinegar, this will clean the bronze.

Re: Will she take on water if she rests on her side?
Wow! something to avoid doing. Even on mud that might cause some damage too. With such a narrow beam and waves, yes I think you would take on water in the cabin. However, I don't have an end view drawing of the CD36. This is what you need to answer the question definitively. You would also have to c...

Re: What to do about interior wood around the ports?
I have issue as well. However, after living aboard I've come to the conclusion that the ports are not actually leaking. It is mostly from condensation. I've been able to reduce some of this by using the clear shrink plastic over the glass portion of the ports. But, I still get a significant amount o...

Re: Recommendations for engine replacement yards in Maine?
I would stay with the Perkins for several reasons. One you are likely to find several additional items that need work. The engine bed, mounts a shaft log, prop, exhaust system, electrical system, gauges...all of which will be complicated by any custom work. Since your 4.108 is still running an overh...

Re: Prop Shaft Rebuild CD 36
Thanks for the info everyone. I think it would be great to start adding linked pages at http://www.capedory.org/specs/cd36.htm to make this type of information more accessible. Or perhaps adding a wiki for this site so members could provide updates... David, I thought about that solution. Spartan se...

Re: Prop Shaft Rebuild CD 36
I can see why CD went out of business. They say that some were made with the hose permanently clamped to bronze fitting and was not meant to be serviced / replaced. This is not the only problem area I've found on this boat. I will most likely replace the bronze fitting with a fiberglass shaft log. A...

Re: Prop Shaft Rebuild CD 36
Oh my! So, Cape Dory had no intension of building boats that could be maintained. That hose is 30 years old. So, the upper screw is a machine screw and, and lower is a lag. I suspected that. Glassed into place with the hose attached? Geez, and I have to basically cut it out to replace the hose. Well...

Re: CD33 rudder drip underway
Amit, I notice that there is a flex coupling installed. There should be a ground strap between one tang on the transmission flange and the mild steel coupling on the shaft. If the shaft is not electrically bonded to the boat the zinc on the prop is doing little to protect other underwater metal on t...

Prop Shaft Rebuild CD 36
I'm starting as new thread on this topic because I have searched without finding answers. I need specific information and photos of the CD 36 prop shaft log. I believe the broker who sold me this boat hacked the installation of the Cutlass bearing. Now after about 200 hours of motoring on the ICW I'...
